Inflatables

Hey,

Does anyone know of somewhere (online or local to Glasgow) that could sell me a few metres of lightweight nylon material - the kind of stuff used in kids play parachutes and kites.

Needs to be windproof so that air doesnt leak too much while its inflating ;)

Tried a few of the standard fabric shops, but they just looked at me blankly. Is there another name for this stuff?

Cheers,

A.

It's called Ripstop Nylon and is widely used by tent makers. Force Ten tentmakers in Port Glasgow must use thousands of kilometres per year and may be worth a try. Otherwise, try Extreme Zone in Troon.

Failing either of those, you could pop in to your local Asda or Lidl and buy a couple of £5 throwaway tents. We've had so many left on the beach through the summer I could almost have made a full scale replica of the R101!

Mandors in Glasgow sell ripstop nylon in various colours including fluorescent. They're based just off Cambridge Street between the RSAMD (Sorry... the Cornservatoirestupidideaforaname) and the School of Art.

If you have a few days grace then you can also buy it readily on ebay.

Now I know I'm looking for ripstop nylon, its everywhere!!

On a somewhat related note - anyone know anything about fans? Looking for a cheap solution to give a high static pressure - thinking some computer type fans with a suitable PSU to try and keep noise down at the moment :S

In the future, if you're ever looking for a bigger fan, try the fans that they use for ventilating confined spaces. They generally call them ventilation blowers, the real bonus is that they are designed to connect to lightweight flexible ducting so you can position the fan some distance away. Your best bet for hire would be industrial hire places (the sort of place you'd hire a jackhammer from). I'd be surprised if you needed more than a couple of PSI at the outside.

The axial fans associated with computers will usually be optimised for high volume flow rather than high static pressure. Inflatable "Santas" and other seasonal disposables usually have a radial blower. If you can wait a couple of weeks then your local shops may have inflatable santas and snowmen (try Maplin too) These usually cost less than buying the wall wart and fan alone even if you dispose of the body shape.

4ft Inflatable Santa Maplin code N92HY only £9.99 "Self-inflates in seconds"!

For the fabric, Cameron or Thunder Balloons in the Bristol area may have a great choice of fabric weights and colours, they are also skilled in the making of 3D shapes from ultra thin ripstop (which isn't easy to sew well) ALSO they do have a fire retardant (Think Balloon Burner flame!) material that is sometimes used for balloon parts that will be touched by the flame. -Sadly they will not be cheap!
