RichM Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 A sound engineer needs help from the Lampies of the world :D A small Birmingham venue I regularly engineer at has asked me to look into upgrading their lighting rig. At present all they have is 4 old and battered parcans lighting the stage. They want to upgrade to some LED cans, as well as a few "wobbly disco type things" (their words, not mine :D) for their DJ nights. So, basically I'm after recommendations as to what is needed/decent etc As a rough guess I think they'll need: 6 LED par cans for the stageMaybe a few more parcans for around the room/mood ligthing etc4 or so "wobbly disco things"HazerController/lighting desk for the above They've also asked for a laser, are there any license/power issues I need to be aware of with one? Room capacity is around 130 people if that's any help. Budget is... up for debate, but definitely not high end.
Ynot Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 To clarify, I'm assuming this is a club venue, NOT a theatre one?
RichM Posted September 30, 2011 Author Posted September 30, 2011 To clarify, I'm assuming this is a club venue, NOT a theatre one? Sorry, yeah, it's a function room used for both live bands and DJ/club nights.
Wingwalker Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 I'd say best thing to do is start with knowing what your budget and power supply is and work from there. A very basic setup using new kit could set you back £1500 - £2000 whan you take into account lanterns, desk and cable. This of course could be reduced if you scour the bargain basements of fleabay but its certainly do-able and you are on the right track in terms of what lights to use in a small environment. However, as for the laser - I recently saw one (new) that did not need specialist cooling systems going for the best part of over £70K. Yes I'm sure there are probably cheaper ones around but they will be limited in what they can do. Hope that helps.
Ynot Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 And there are a LOT of considerations to be, well, considered with regard to lasers....Don't ask me to quote them as I'm not best placed to do so, but there are people here who can/will.
JDLX Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 Where abouts is the venue? I could pop down one day have a look and give my 2p if you like? :)
Modge Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 ALG do a lot of club \ bar installs in Birmingham. Disclaimer: I have a vested interest since they may well use LimeLIGHT for the control if you use them...
RichM Posted October 3, 2011 Author Posted October 3, 2011 you are on the right track in terms of what lights to use in a small environment. Cool, are there any particular brands to look out for (to avoid as well as recommended)? I want to keep everything LED if possible for power supply reasons. However, as for the laser - I recently saw one (new) that did not need specialist cooling systems going for the best part of over £70K. Yes I'm sure there are probably cheaper ones around but they will be limited in what they can do. I think they are definitely looking at the more cheapo DJ type things, rather than anything spectacular! It's only a small venue. And there are a LOT of considerations to be, well, considered with regard to lasers....Don't ask me to quote them as I'm not best placed to do so, but there are people here who can/will. Can anyone help here? IF it's too much of a minefield I'll just tell them not to bother with one :D Where abouts is the venue? I could pop down one day have a look and give my 2p if you like? :) Will PM you :) Edit - Hmmm, 10 minutes on Google has convinced me to tell them to forget about a laser :D
Ashley R Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Edit - Hmmm, 10 minutes on Google has convinced me to tell them to forget about a laser :D Wise Move! Evidence slightly more in depth here http://www.blue-room.org.uk/index.php?showtopic=49584
