VGA and Video down a single CAT 5?

We have a client who has just opened a new exhibition centre. We sold them some kit but weren't involved in any of the actual installation work. It turns out that the electricians who ran the cable have only run a single CAT 5 cable between one of the projectors and the control point. There has been no other cabling run apart from this solitary line.

The building is now finished and decorated, so it is not practical to pull additional cabling through. The projector is going to be used for both VGA and composite video. I'm wondering if baluns exist that can run VGA and composite down one CAT 5 cable? I can find plenty that do VGA and stereo audio.

I know that the other option is to use some sort of switcher or upscaler at the control point, but there is very little budget left so that would very much be a last resort.

technically any rgbhv{vga} balun is multiformat as the rbg part will allow composite , y/c and component to be transmitted. Id go for the Kramer TP 123 / 124 as these will work with any video format and reasonably high resolutions, cable dependant. They also add rs232 which means you can add a control system which can be usefull. You will have to adress the fact that if you say want to use vga plus composite video,at the same time, you will need to use the R of the RGBhv for video and this will either require some soldering or a pair of vga - bnc fans a t piece and a joiner, you will need a fan in with only the r used at the input end. same goes for component or y/c.

However you can look at a basic comp - vga scaler which you can get for as little as 50.00, not very flexible, but it will work ok, CPC sell one ive used before and its not that bad... Its not as good as the direct cable connection, butr its a lot less of a faff...

Smart-E certainly do multi-format baluns.

One thing to watch, is when VGA is present, the composite output has the Red content of the RGB signal on it which may upset some TVs or projectors.

We used the Smart-E RX111 and associated transmitter on a recent gig where we only had access to pre-installed cable runs for the temp-install so decided this would be best. Combined with custom software to switch the TV inputs to the required outputs, it did everything we wanted.
