Pressure sensors on wedges...

When doing the big rock festivals (Reading/Leeds, Download etc) we actually put mesh decks (like, steeldeck, except, made of very strong mesh) directly upstage of the wedges, on 6"-12" legs.

This allows the artist to stand on it and rock out completely safely and without damaging the wedge, whilst appearing to be stood on the wedge. The mesh means it is acoustically transparent.

The pressure sensor idea is cool but this works really well and the audience are generally oblivious to it.

If you are using kit that can't take the strain, then you are supplying the wrong kit. If bands trash kit as part of the "act" then bill them for it. I did hear rumour of a band trashing SM58s at one per person per show, but it was part of the act and the cost of the act, and simply chargeable.

...and, quite an achievement! SM58s take a lot of trashing.

Not in my experience. http://www.blue-room.org.uk/public/style_emoticons/default/blink.gif Got a few new back when I was in school... Lasted a day before the wires attaching the capsual to the XLR connector broke off! http://www.blue-room.org.uk/public/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif

And how many times did you unscrew it during that day?

Only once to work out what was going on. I wasnt one of those brats that destroyed everything. No, I was the one who had half an idea on how to work anything in the building technical wise.

Of course you weren't ;). Everyone who grows up to be technically minded learns by taking things to bits/breaking things when they are young.

A while ago I saw The Pigeon Detectives live. One of their little quirks was swinging the lead's vocal mic round the stage by the cable. It shot off quite a few times (thankfully in to the wings) before they seemed to get it stuck on properly - maybe with a vast amount of tape!

I've known a band rock up with their own much taped up 58 on a lead and ask to have that plugged in and on a stand, so they can switch to using it for the last song, midway through which they spin it by the lead and into the floor a bit...

Build the cost of new foams into your hire quote, class them as a consumable that will need replacing regularly. I assume you don't complain when bands use your radio equipment and the batteries have less voltage in them by the end of the set!! Or when engineers write on your PVC tape on the desk in Sharpie and you cant use that piece of PVC tape again!!
