Dave C
Hello, I just saw in a local newspaper a picture of a member of a pop duo (they are not a band, they are 'singers' and I use that term loosely. 'Entertainers' might be a better description). In this picture he was shown climbing the DSR stage roof / PA flytower upright truss. It is quite a way up, probably with his feet at 3m from the ground below. There is obviously no harness, as he is in the middle of a performance and seems to have just decided to climb the truss. Could anyone give an opinion as to how this would play out if he fell, maybe onto the security folks or the audience? Is the 'artist' breaking any laws? Should they be fined or have another sanction applied for endangering people working at the event or the audience? What is the responsibility of the stage crew, the production crew (sound/lighting), and the artist's own production people and management? I'm very curious as to people's opinions on this - I have had artists climbing the groundstacked PA before, but would not be happy about it in the future. I have a digital version of the picture, but am somewhat reluctant to post it, given my not wanting to give any webspace to the 'artist'... Thanks! Dave C would the name of there duo happen to begin with a J? if were thinking the same this happened to me a few years back and they started climbing the truss and well were asked to climb down by the security staff and were told that there actions were very silly by the stage manager after they exited the stage. pete. Hi Pete, yes the name does begin with a J, but I'm not sure they were around that many years ago! They are a product of a TV talent show, with funny hair... Dave. Dave. ah as I suspected! and time seams to fly away with me, it was about this time lastyear at a festival in stoke! and they made there ever more dangerous truss climbing appearance which the crew were not impressed with too say the least! however if they have done it again it leads me into thinking that they need to think of a new act! kerry davies
Hmmm(tm Ynot) Maybe as he/they are at work and at height he/they need to be asked for the relevant Risk Assessment. With any luck by the time they have learned to read and write and discovered what an RA actually is we will all be dead and gone....and so will they. Either that or dob them in on the HSE reporting line? Optimal scenario for me is if one fell on t'other and both were mangled.
savage1
Worst climbing offenders I've seen are Airbourne and the Cruxshadows both bands have vocalist who like to climb wherever they can get to.. The guitarist from Airbourne also got one of his roadies to hold him by his ankles hanging over a balcony at a gig I was working... although as that one was orginised (Unlike his climbing the tower at download) I would like to hope some safety planning went in to it. J Pearce
I once saw a lead singer monkey barring round the circle truss in the downstairs of rock city nottingham... Perhaps we should all be risk assessing this sort of thing and boarding low level truss to prevent access?

Perhaps we should all be risk assessing this sort of thing and boarding low level truss to prevent access? I did a stage build at a rock festival where, at the promoters' request (due to concern about this happening), all vertical trusses had black tabs up to about 7', with velcro down one edge to take it off if a genuine climber (with relevant PPE etc) needed to use it. erroneousblack
Basically cover your arse! If you've told them it's unsafe, or got them to sign an induction form, then they do it anyway, their fault. Trouble is I know it's never that easy. When I did my first RA training in the early 90's, a lot of things were deemed low risk because, "no-one would be so stupid to do that!" Experience now tells us, oh yes they would! kerry davies
Awkward subject in that with gymnasts and circus acts they carry out their own RA and what "we" would regard as hazardous activity at work becomes part of the act. One avant garde dance act featured a bassist and lead guitarist from the house band leaping off a tower scaff and bouncing on a trampoline whilst playing. I didn't RA it as I know nowt about trampolining but their choreographer took responsibility. EB is quite right in that one does what one can to dissuade them and if they wish to break the rules then other than showstopping there is little one can do, it is their responsibility as long as it doesn't endanger anyone else. cameroncoats
Is 'natural selection' a better way of putting it?E2A: on second thoughts, endangering others isn't really natural selection :/
Starstruck
Hmm , I feel you pain ! I worked with them just over a month ago and we had lined flower planters along the front of the stage and strategically positioned the monitors to stop the idiots jumping off the front of the stage (which was pretty high) but they just kicked them off the front of the stage and did it anyway ! The photographers in the pit were moved out in case they landed on them !! So Im really interested in the answer as well, I was helping out as stage manager so what would have happened if I walked out onto stage and slapped the pair of them across the back of the head ?? ** laughs out loud ** Kev
