Bouncing the Iron

Recommended Posts

This may seem like a silly question but we were trying to reason it at work today...

Why does the iron have to be show to the audience at each performance? (I understand it is for insurance purposes and accept that)

But why is it essential to show audience members the iron when you don't test the fire alarm, sprinkler system, fire extinguisher or perform the evacuation procedure while an audience are in attendance, surely if regular tests are performed on the iron that would be enough to satisfy the insurance companies - please don't get me wrong I have no issue with showing the iron and am not trying to get out of doing it I'm just interested in the reasoning.

There is then a side line question of if a set of fire retardant stage curtains (tabs) are used as a fire 'shield' in a smaller venue is it therefore essential to show the tabs during each performance?

Just something to ponder over.....

It has rarely been a requirement to do it, but just one of those things that has become a standard at the venues that do it. My venue never ever did it - and the license required it to be in good working order and seal within 30 seconds of release. Every year it is tested and as long as this happens they WERE happy. The new license system linked to the premises removed totally the requirement we had to even have it in working order. So ours still gets serviced, but from time to time, we don't worry about the drop line being blocked with monitors or even bits of set.

Some venues drop it at the interval, so the crew can play ball games (hand ball) without the audience hearing, because the insulation cuts out noise, too!
