paulears
I don't think we've had anything on this here - so I've included a link to a topic on a video forum. I didn't realise the pack microphone input wiring was different between G2 and G3. more here
Ynot
Now THAT is an interesting point...As I have 13 sets arriving on Friday with 11 needed to be ready for a show next week I'm glad you raised that one in time!!
Richard P-W
I have a mix of G1 and G3 kit and the original G1 mics have ring and sleeve shorted, so I've always done the same when wiring up my own. On a related note, I made a 1/4" jack to minijack for guitar use, connected to ring and sleeve and left the tip floating. Worked fine.At some point I've also ended up with a moulded lead (with the locking minijack) which has the tip and sleeve shorted, with ring connected to the 1/4" - which sounds sensible as it grounds the unused mic input on the pack, but then I started wondering about the effect it would have on shorting the plug-in-power on that terminal. I've only ever plugged this lead into a G1 pack and it survived!! Does anyone know what the genuine Sennheiser leads do? This lead does look identical to the ones they sell, but with the origins of it being unknown, I can't be certain
Shez
I've just checked an ME2 that came with one of my G2 sets - ring & sleeve are linked there. I would assume that any of Sennheiser's own mics would be wired like that. Anyone got a CPC equivalent they can check?

Will have a look later if I can - mind you, I usually chop off the non-locking moulded plugs on the mics we had recently and replaced them with rewirable locking options. But I do have at least 3 new in box heads to look at.
Sound Man
I can't see Sennheiser changing the wiring combinations on the G3's. Sennheiser would have to manufacture a range of new mics including their headsets to work with the new G3's. I'm sure I checked a CPC headset mic a couple of years ago and found that that was wired with ring and sleeve linked together. David
paulears
Well - the info is from Mr Willetts, who is the fountain of factual info for all things Sennheiser?
Russ83
I've used the CPC headsets (here) with both the G2 and G3 without any problems if that helps.
Rob_Beech
To confirm, CPC headsets ARE wired ring and sleeve together so they work in any of the packs. I also do this when replacing the plugs on them for the black metallic ones CPC do, generally I just strip the cable further and drop the same cable onto both rather than putting a little link cable in. I do have caps in the XLR - locking jack leads but I too cannot remember the value, I'll try to remember to look when I can as I don't have any here. Ynot
Interestingly, I've been told that all of our existing mics work OK - all from CPC, but most have had the standard moulded non-locking plug replaced with the black Senn-type locking plugs... Those that have been changed do NOT have the ring strapped across - I know because I soldered most of them...Will be double checking later, but odd that it's been stated that they shouldn't. Hmmm...
