Thanks for all your advice on this matter, it was most enlightening. Ive got all the documentation so I might try Steinberg.

our computers are inside a workstation so they ad to bring in an alan key and take a panel off to get them.

you don't need standalone computers for Cubase, ours are all domain connected, and run Cubase, Sibelius and FL studio with no problems, exept we cant use RangerRemote in there as it and Sibelius dont get along.

as long as your not trying to use thinclients, Cubase is fine on any sensibly specced PC on a network, gone are the days of requiring a stripped back PC for audio editing (unless your getting into the loads of tracks, loads of VSTs)

Thats interesting to know. I didn't know cubase had a system like that. I know Sibelius has a wireless license system as thats what is in use know. When you say domain connected, what does that actually mean? (I'm really not that clued up on computers) My second post on this topic explains my situation more.

I'm looking into some recording softwear for the music dept, what version of Logic do you run? I was initially looking at Cubase but this dongle malarky could make what is already a hard task (getting the IT guys to allow stand-alone comps) even more anoying.

We use Logic Pro 9.

This requires up to date (Intel) macs to run, but as all our computers were (over)due to be updated, we found the saving on software (compared to other DAW packages) meant the costs were about the same - and most of out staff prefer Logic.

Tim - You have a PM with more info.

I'm intrigued too, I have great difficulty sharing data for cubase projects over the network - do you need bettre than the usual 10/100?

when I say on a domain connected computer, I mean you still need cubase installed on the machine, and a dongle.

Like you are machines are not dedicated to recording.

In your case, I might suggest peaking nicley with the IT guys, you would need a folder on the C:\ drive or another local drive to record music etc to, trying to work audio over a wireless network just isnt going to work reliably

there are two types of network, a workgroup, PC connected together, can access shard folder/printer etc, everything held on the machine in use.

domain: everything is controlled by the domain controller, down to profile/settings, documents usually stored centrally, this way wherever you log in you have all your settings/documents excactly the same, can cause problems with some software, we not had any problems with sibelius, cubase or FL studio, except a local folder on the machine for students to record/work music from/to this then needs copying to their documents/somwhere for saving.

unfortunalty cubase dont yet have a system like sibelius for licencing, our IT guys are in talks with them to see if they are developing one, it would bve MUCH easier.
