Runing fixture without a lamp

Hi Guys,

When repairing fixtures is it safe to run discharge fixtures without a lamp so you can troubleshoot problems? If not, what should you do so that they can be powered up with the covers removed for repairs?

Cheers

In general I would advise against running the fixture without a lamp.

The ballast will try to strike the lamp, resulting in very high voltages being present, not only possibly dangerous but may shorten the life of the ballast/ignitor.

With an electronic ballast the risk is less since these only "try" to light a failed or missing lamp for a short time before giving up.

The instructions normaly state not to use without a good lamp fitted.

For units with the conventional 3 terminal ignitor you can disconnect the live input terminal to it and stick a bit of conn block on the end to keep it safe.
