Adding an extra boost to KVM extender

I'm using a Adder XDVI to (keyboard and mouse only) control catalyst from the control position whilst the catalyst rack is sat at the back of the theatre close to the projectors. The cat5 had to be run through the infrastructure anD I'm guessing that is pushing the extender to it's 50m limit, as the mouse and keyboard have a tendency to freeze up. (Not ideal for Qing) I'm looking for a way to boost the power a bit. So far I have tried adding in a powered net gear hub and a router just to give a boost but it doesn't seem to work. I guess because it is not receiving an ip address. Apart from upgrading the extender and just relying on the catalyst webserver remote is there a way of boosting the strength of the KVM? Cheers guys :)

I think you will find that the adder xdvi is not ip based so adding a network hub will not improve things.

Using a thicker cat5 cable could work as described in the manual how ever you said you were using the infrastructure so that may not be an option. Your only option would be to buy a different non ip based kvm which has a better range or to splash out and by a ip based device with one of those you should get 100m possibly up to 200m without the need for a hub. Sadly I don't see away you could upgrade what you have at the moment.

For distances greater than 50m they have the X200 which I have used numerous times through infrastructure based systems with no problems. This is good for up to 200m although signal loss and resolutions start to drop at the higher end.

Is it not possible to run a CAT5 cable through the theatre?

Screen sharing is ok as is VNC but I would be nervous cueing a show using this technology. Maybe that's just me!

If it's a dedicated LAN or WLAN and the VNC server and VNC client are only running show related software there should be no issues

I swapped the addlink XDVI for the x200. Made a proper job of it and installed it properly into the catalyst rack. No problems any more as I sit here opping on opening night with a happy KVM and my mac book running screen sharing and the catalyst web remote! Cheers guys!
