Magic Q Patching

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm sure this is an incredibly simple question but I can't figure it out (I've even read the manual!)

I've patched most of my fixtures into MagicQ, and now realised there is one which needs to be patched to Universe 1, Channels 1 to 3.

How can I shift all the other fixtures along to make room for it?

Hope this makes sense,

Thanks,

Dave

Just patch the fixture and if they are the same as other heads they will get added to the same automatic groups. Or if you have a head in the address space you want this one on remove it first then select new head and type

<no heads> @ <universe>-<start address>

i.e. 3@1-3 would patch 3 heads starting at universe 1 address 3

You can change head numbers in the patch but the reset of the desk follows the heads as I found out the other day! But I then change the order I selected the individual heads and re-saved the group - all was then happy

Do you currently have any fixtures patched to 1-1>1-3? If not, just select your fixture, type 1@1-1 (as Smudge correctly states) then change it's head number to that desired.

Alternatively, if you do have something patched there, patch the unit on a free DMX address (doesn't matter where) and just change the head number to what you want it to be.

Either way, if you have a fixture allocated to that head number already (provided your list is sorted by head number), locate that head number in the patch list, select it, press shift and end to select all head numbers below that one type a head number one greater than the number you want to patch your fixture to (if you want to patch the unit on Head 4, type 5) and hit enter, this will reallocate the first selected head to 5 and place every head highlighted into an incrementing head number. You can then use the above methods to patch the fixture.

A couple of notes about this method, firstly, if you've got gaps in your head numbers (1,2,3,4,5,6,8,9) you'll end up loosing those gaps after (1,2,3,5,6,7,8,9) also, if you have any virtual dimmers patched (1,2,3,4,5,5v,6,7) you'll also loose them (1,2,3,5,6,7,8,9).

I recommend manually saving the show before you attempt this.

I do have fixtures patched there yes, but it's not the head numbers I'm fussed about, I would like to keep the order in which the fixtures are patched the same. I.e what is currently on 1-1>1-3 would end up on 1-4>1-6 and so on, so I can't move the fixtures currently on 1-1>1-3 to an empty address.

This is because I need to control an installed rig for which I cannot change the DMX addressing, I forgot that the first dimmer needed to start at 4, not 1, to allow for an RGB on 1>3, and now need to shift all the addresses up by 3

Hope this is more clear

Taking an example where heads 1 - 24 are patched to address 1 - 24, which we want to move to 4 - 27. In Patch select the DMX address field of head one. Press select and arrow down to the bottom of the list (in this case head 24), then type 4 [Enter]. It will ask you if you want to move aside head 4 at this address (or something similar); press 'yes'. You should now have heads 1-24 patched to 4-27, leaving you room to patch DMX addresses 1-3.

Hope this helps
