Good external sound card?

Are these susceptable to the usual laptop noise/interference that can occur on some devices?

in a word , yes

Or in another word, "No."

My M-Audio does what I bought it for... It solves the annoying "Bzzzt, bzzz bzz." from the Dell power supply and gives me a decent line level output to the desk.

Many of the other noises can be solved with attention to good practice; mobile on "Flight" profile to stop it polling, wireless disabled on the laptop. Sound schemes <none>.

And if you're using I-pod, switch off the "Beep."

Hey Guys

I am looking to buy a mid range external sound card with preferrably 2 in 2 out XLR to run thngs like smaart and also to get audio out from a pc thus avoiding the dodgy h/phone jack, does any body know of any particular make/model that would do this at a reasonable price? I have been on the m-audio website but nothing seems to suit?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanx

I can highly recommend the M-Audio cards, I have a Fast track Ultra, if you must have XLR out you can make a st jack to XLR lead or even buy the adaptors that are available. You won't regret buying a good sound card because there are other factors like the software that comes with it or latency. With the Ultra you can route audio to six different power amps so when the director says " I want the piano track to come from the piano" it's no problem. I just use use a jack to jack in to the aux in of the desk and route it with the sends.

If you are using (spits) Windoze 7, beware the M Audio card/drivers. They are limited to the number of outputs they'll drive. More info on the SCS forum.

Can you explain what you mean by "spits" I am running Windows 7 64 with my Fast Track Ultra and all outputs are available.

M$ made changes to audio handleing late in development of 7 that has frustrated software writers somewhat. I think it is WDM drivers in particular that in some cases misbehave above two channel use.
