Brian
...and people wonder why the public at large see Health and Safety as a bit of a joke... ...I wonder if the person who put this up had any idea. kerry davies
Peanut packaging with; "May contain nuts" is one of my faves but there are hundreds of idiots out there. I did have one punter at an event point out that exact sign, Brian. He was all blustering and red faced about the idiocy of it until I pointed out that; A: we were in a play area for a council estate, and B: the Welsh Harp reservoir was the other side of the new railings. The council replaced it with 'beware of deep water' asap but as a temp measure they stuck that one up.
Yorkie
This one's pretty bad: http://davidgill.fotopic.net/p9220679.html

Just Some Bloke
Peanut packaging with; "May contain nuts" is one of my faves I can help with this one. Actually it reads "contains nuts", which may sound equally stupid, but allows supermarkets and manufacturers to say "ALL of our produce is labelled with allergy information". If they didn't label nuts as containing nut then they couldn't make that statement. Silly, but pragmatic!
Seano
Peanut packaging with; "May contain nuts" Peanuts are not nuts. Actually they're more like peas. Actually it reads "contains nuts", which may sound equally stupid Sounds more stupid to me. A packet of peanuts does not necessarily contain nuts, though it may contain traces of nuts if its been processed in a place that also processes nuts. (Highly likely I would think.) Andrew C
I read somewhere that the "May contain nuts" is the "standard phrase" in all English speaking countries (where they care about such things).
Seano
I read somewhere that the "May contain nuts" is the "standard phrase" in all English speaking countries (where they care about such things). UK specific, and refreshingly sensible: clicky. (The section headed "Advisory Labelling")
pritch
I've just got home with a pack of chicken pakoras from Morrisons. They seem to have gone for the catch-all "May contain allergens". e2a: Their wholegrain mustard also has the blindingly obvious "Contains mustard"
J Pearce
Not all is obvious though. Barbecue sauce and crisps are often veggie friendly, as are smoky bacon flavours. Cheese and onion crisps and gelatinous sweets however often contain meat products. In this age of artificial flavourings and processed ingredients, the contents of foodstuffs are not always obvious. For reference peanuts are legumes, like peas as Seano pointed out and lentils.
ojc123
An example of a different kind of pointless. We have a toaster in the staff kitchen. When it was first put in we put up a sign saying do not use metal items to get the toast out of the toaster (or words to that effect) and simple instructions on how to use the toaster. This was greeted with much hilarity and many "Mad Safety Elf" comments. Last week I noticed someone trying to get toast out of the toaster with an all metal knife while it was still working. The response? "How else do I get the toast out?" My response? Speechless.
ramdram
I cannot resist this, ** laughs out loud **. This colleague of yours...wouldn't be an advocate of riding around on the top of a moving tallescope??? It's this kind of unthinking that resulted in the introduction of H&S. ojc123
The person would not know what a tallescope is. Very at home with special needs and child protection legislation though. You can't have everything.
