Matrix Code Gobo???

Hi, I'm currently in the process of creating a lighting design based around the matrix. This is for a son et lumiere. I'm looking for a matrix code gobo or possibley how I could create one, preferably I would like to buy one though as I'm looking for a professional standard. I'd love any ideas or websites where I could buy one. Preferably I would like a gobo to put in our movers, we have Martin mac 250 profiles. Any other information to help me create this; would be very helpful, thanks.

This sounds like you'll need a custom glass gobo - available from most of the usual 'players'.

DHA/Rosco, Gobosource, Projected Image etc etc.

Price will be, for a colour glass custom design, at least £100 I'd expect. Copies will be less after the first is made.

(Anyone have any cheaper options, please shout as I have one to get made in the next month or two...)

If its just the grid of text you want, then a black and white glass gobo should do, but with a green colour filter at the same time. Should be a bit cheaper than a custom colour glass. Give the usual contenders as Ynot mentioned a call to get a quote. Remember, that you'll also end up with a circle overall. So you'd also start restricting the size of it if you wanted to keep the grid square (Square peg / round hole problem!)

However if you're trying to do the scrolling matrix text, I wouldn't think that just using a gobo would look right. I don't think it would give a "matrix"-ey effect as you won't have the scrolling letters going down the screen, nor the slow fadeout they have either. Can you not look into using some form of projection instead rather than a gobo in a Mac250?

How bothered are you about recognisable characters? If that's not vital, might one of the more straight-lined breakups do?

Rosco 77635? 78446? 77401, 77402, 77501, 77502, 77503, 77504? 79662?

Or 81106, if you can cope with just 1s and 0s?

Projected Image do what you're after for £35.00 plus VAT in monochrome glass. The gobo is aptly named binary code.

I don't know how many you need or how many movers you have but with 2 images overlapping from 2 movers and some clever programming of focus/intensity you can create a pretty convincing ''matrix scroll'' effect. Plus if you have Mac250 Entours you'll have the use of a prism and gobo indexing too.

However on a different note, and I don't know what budget you have, have you thought about using a laser? I've used a Laserword 1.2W Green laser and loads of haze to create this effect in the past.

This is one of those rare occasions where I am going to suggest that a Video Projection or LED Wall might be a better solution than a Generic or Mover with a Gobo.

Takes a little investment in time and effort with a video or digital gobo company, but perhaps coupled with a stealth screen or some Martin LC wall, some interesting experiments with Light, and Depth Perception could result in a very pleasant outcome.

Cheers

well I was thinking of creating my own one, but price is going to be an issue so I dont think I can do this, thanks for the help anyway.

the first few I dont think are going to work, I was really looking for some actual codeing.

81106 is a possibility but im gonna have to look into it and see if there are any alternatives, was looking for something slightly more complex.

thanks anyway

Something like one of these with the appropriate FX disk would work well, again with a green gel. The advantage of the FX projector is that the numbers would move in just one direction.

I really was looking for just gobos, im already doing some projection, just thought a gobo would create a nicer effect.

thanks anyway :)

Now this sort of thing is very useful, could I ask what company this is from?? Looked on rosco cant find it and thats the only gobo website I know. Also do you know if this comes in metal as glass is a bit of budget strech for me. thanks very much for the help will look into this a bit further. :)

They (ProjectedImage) do a metal one but is IMHO not as nice as the glass one.

But at £8.00 plus VAT possibly more within reach of your budget.
