JimWebber Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 I think people here are getting confused about the issues and definition of a "Y" split. Just to clarify a little on Paul's post above. A standard DMX fixture has an "In", and an "Out" not only that, the fixtures electronics also sit on a leg. Hence the "Y" split. As we all know, splitting like this is a big no-no, but seeing as the internal split is only a few centimetres (if that), there is no real problem. A five and three pin fixture will normally have the two connectors electrically connected as well as the electronics connection. In normal use, only one connector will be used. Problems only occur if both outputs are used, thus causing a "long distance split". In all cases the internal "split" is pretty much negligible. In this case, or for example the OP's proposed modification, as long as you only use ONE input, and ONE output, you should be fine. Ironically, in this case, using a terminator on the "unused" output, is perhaps the worse thing you could do! Hope this helps a little? Jim
mark_s Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 As long as you don't extend the connection to the PCB, its irrelevant how much cable you add to get from the input to the output. It's equivalent to plugging a bit of cable in to the output.
smalljoshua Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Hows this for a solution, from both input connectors, run twisted pair to the input on the PCB, from the same PCB input run twisted pair to the output sockets, voilà no y-split needed, just daisy chain between in-pcb-out. Josh
abbotsmike Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo359/abbotsmike/LEDDMX.jpg For clarity, I think this is what the OP is trying to achieve, and I dont think the 'y splits' such as they are, will be an issue, unless someone tries to use both sockets on the input, or output side.
Ashley R Posted February 17, 2011 Author Posted February 17, 2011 http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo359/abbotsmike/LEDDMX.jpg For clarity, I think this is what the OP is trying to achieve, and I dont think the 'y splits' such as they are, will be an issue, unless someone tries to use both sockets on the input, or output side. In this diagram, swap the Output with Input and vise versa. (the Input is closer to the PCB, than the output is) The Output would be wired direct to the Input XLR's and not to the PCB. A pretty picture makes everything clearer to everyone :** laughs out loud **:
Nicktaylor Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 The DMX battens I have just bought have in at one end and out at the other anyway. I bought the outside ones as it might be useful if any water ever splashes on them. But actually the sound to light does not work on the out door ones. Made in China but look very good.
Jivemaster Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 The Y split comes from fitting the "away from board" connectors without removing the connector on the board. If you later use a row of these fittings using the board end connector you have the unterminated spurs giving you possible problems.
