Camera Advice

I am looking for a decent priced fixed camera (which will be mounted about 3-4m above the ground), the image from which will be projected. I have been looking at the CCTV style cameras, and was wondering if anyone has much experience with these or can recommend what to look for. We are not looking for anything special, however decent performance at low light levels would be an advantage.

Get a day and night unit with an auto Iris lens that you can also set up to not go into black and white when the lighting level drops which is fairly standard for cctv units and will look dreadfull as it changes everytime the lighting does so you need to be able to turn it off. Other than that you pretty much get what you pay for and a couple of hundred quid gets a decent camera. We have used Samsung Techwin units which are pretty cheap and work well enough as well as being generally available. remember you will need a PSU...

If you plan on having changing light levels, I'd recomend using a camera with a live operator instead of a CCTV for projecting the image. As was stated, as the camera switches for changing light level (usually in the gain) it will be a noticeable sudden change each time that it does. If you have a broadcast style camera with an operator, they can adjust the iris accordingly to the changing light levels without the need for a change in gain. This will keep a more even image in the long run. On the other hand, if you are doing a presenter with image magnification without a change in lighting, then many different CCTV cameras will do nicely. Of course, you need to consider what the output of your projector is and try to match your camera.
