On this same subject, does anyone know if the flower shaped lights used on "Million Pound Drop" are a custom job? I know Panalux does their lighting but thought I'd just drop a post in here while I remember. I've had a look on the Panalux website but can't see them listed.

You can see them on the home page: https://www.themillionpounddrop.com/

I don't know for certain, but I would hazard an educated guess at Bog standard 500w Symmetric Floods on a bit of circular scaff, and panned round 90deg's from the clamp.

Cheapest way to recreate would be some cheap and cheerful Garden Floods.

Cheers

Funnily I did something similar for a show with just 4 sets of 4x 500w flood in a x and + shape about 3 years ago to achieve a similar effect... wish I could find photos (would be even better if I could prove that C4 had seen that show ;))

Seem to remember LSI or TPI (or both of course...) reviewing the technicals of I believe a Radio 1 Big Weekend event a few years ago where there were something like 80 of those 6 way halogen units. Google may tell you more... think it would have been more than 3 years back though.

Hi,

They are space lights, the industry standard light for the film industry, normally used in conjunction with a silk skirt, pointing downwards to create a nice soft light. They normally hang horizontally but are used vertically on 'The Drop' as an effect. They normally go out with 6 800watt lamps in but can be used with lower ratings. Some are socapex fed for individual control of each lamp or some are fed with 2 x 16a plugs. Panalux own THOUSANDS of them but I think PRG may carry a few too, as well as Arris, Take 2 Lighting and ELP to name a few.

Are these not fairly easy to replicate on the DIY front?

3 pieces of flat metal bar bolted one on top of the other in the centre, 6 x 300w floods either tailed off individually or all together and a couple of holes for clampage?

Ok so the floods won't be all flush against one another but it's the front look that counts, no?

There are several manufacturers but I think a lot of companies get their own made up to save on costs. It's not uncommon nowadays for a film to have 1000 of these in the roof of one studio "just in case" they can't get what they want when the set goes in beneath.
