back_ache
I came across a 4 minute video on-line made by a photographer. Basically he is suggesting that people spend some time alone with a simple light and an egg to gain an understanding of how light interacts with an object. I thought I'd share it here as I think it's an interesting idea and one that could be used for communicating lighting ideas. What do we think? LeeStoddart
Hmmmm... (TM used without permission) I'm not sure how much you would get from studying light interacting with an egg. The most noticeable feature of an egg is that it is a (comparatively) smooth surface without edges. In the majority of cases we are lighting objects which have surfaces which are not smooth and certainly have edges. It is useful to study the effect of lighting on objects and most reference texts have examples of lighting a face from different directions. I have used this in class or talk situations with a birdie, moving it around the subject, showing the different effect which is produced from classic positions - 45 degree lighting, straight on, up lighting, top lighting, back lighting, side lighting. But in this demonstration the fact that we are lighting the head and shoulders of a person gives shadows and highlights which make the exercise relevant. kitlane
I agree with Lee. When I do this sort of excercise I generally use a person rather than an egg.
J Pearce
Its amazing what the kids in Yr9 pick up from 30mins working in threes with a torch (one person as model, one as lighting op/stand, one as viewer/audience).
