Ynot
Later in the year I believe I'll be needing to look at sourcing a spiral stair to give access to a raised platform of around 6 ft 6 ins or so. Haven't yet started serious searching the usual suspects, but I do feel that this might be a bit of a specialist item, so throwing it open to the masses for any feedback that might be available. It will need to have either a turn and a quarter or turn and a half to get from stage level to platform, and obviously extend above the upper raise to provide handrail etc. The upper deck will be a solid section of Litedeck, so simplest would be the option of bolting direct to that BUT it's not a problem if some custom work is needed to allow a good and safe fit. One of our scenic designers has set her boyfriend the task of coming up with a timber design for such a beast - he's a qualified specialist carpenter, (and she's also asked her mathematician dad to work out the diagrammaticals of the spiral!) but unless he's willing to build it at cost, that option may take it out of the (as yet unspecified) budget. So - any ideas from those who have experience in the topic?

Ynot
Well blow me! Until you pointed at that topic, I'd have sworn we'd not discussed this before, but just one look at it has sparked the grey cells, and yes I now recall reading that one some time ago! Slap my donnies for failing to search proper-like (I did say I hadn't Googled yet though!!) Cheers for that - maybe the mods would like to merge the two...? That said, the first topic doesn't mention much on the hire front which is likely to be my first and preferred option (other than the member who had a set piece includng balcony, which may not suit)..... torch1972
The last time I worked at the Kings Head in Islington London, they had a spiral staircase stored in their shed on the roof. It not one piece but made up individual steps and they fit together to make a staircase and would fit in the back of a car. Give them a call. If you have no joy then PM me and I will see what I can do.
Jivemaster
You can't get a turn and a bit into a rise of only 6'6" without very low headroom and some bumped heads. This sort of height will be only a part turn. -When you stand on a step, you need headroom to the step above, and the step in front when you come down

cedd
Brassneck theatre company have a couple that have been used in various sets. They've been painted and butchered a few times, but there should still be all the bits for a full staircase there. You can just see a pair of them upstage in this pic;http://i513.photobucket.com/albums/t335/ceddison/n654882679_1222156_8839.jpg The drop below the riser so are longer than you'd think, and there's another pair downstage (pretty much level with Jekyll) which get all the way up to the balcony - similar height to what you're after. Their website's here;http://brassnecktheatre.com/

Yep - can see what you mean there - the turns and/or height of platform aren't hugely critical at this stage (can you tell I'm only brainstorming this at the moment... :D)On reflection I can probably do it in a single turn, with a tad more height if needed. madorangepanda
Funny that this has come up. As I've now been asked to acquire one for a production of Rent. In addition to the above, if anyone knows of one in or around London, with about one full turn that can be hired that would be nice. Moderation: This topic was re-opened when people were looking to source spiral staircases, so this topic has been closed - the link is here.
