vectorworks quick question

Hi there,

Just wanted to know, the 3D moving light sequences I've seen on youtube, are you able to create those sequences to music etc in vectorworks spotlight or do I need ESP or wysiwyg or something like that? (sorry if this is a daft question new to the software side of lighting design)

Rob

for example something like this...

is this possible in vectorworks?

VW does not do real time rendering, it only does framed rendering, by this I mean stills.

To do rendering in VW, you need the add-on program called RenderWorks

From what I've gathered, the design process takes part in Vectorworks and then you export to ESP Vision which is used to do real-time visualisation like in the video above.

So creating the stage, hanging structures, rigging fixtures, etc. is done within Vectorworks; then the file is transferred into ESP Vision to do the visualation, automation of set, general waggling stuff.

Try Daslight. completely free of charge . including fully functional 3D visualiser, just try typing daslight into youtube and you will see some very impressive results.

forgot to mention a full video tutorial on their website. which really helps with setting up.

Oh thats kl, I think creating stills of each lighting state will be fine for more conventional theatre stuff where less movers are going off. However Daslight looks great, if I made a model in vectorworks would I be able too load it in to Daslight for 3d visualisation?

Thanks

not sure , but I don't think so, it is a good basic visualiser package but I think you have to create the room setting from scratch then import the fixtures which can then be moved around quite easily.

Thanks Richard,

all really helpful but it doesn't appear multiplatform and I am on a mac!! =[ so unfortunately not viable, having only just got vectorworks it is going to take me a few months too get too grips with modelling on that anyway!

Thanks Rob

Daslight (or the sunlite equivalent) is not free for console visualisation as far as I know. The online specs are misleading. I don't think there is any way to get external input (including artnet & proprietary protocols) to the visualiser without an interface which unlocks these functions.

Does Sweetlight even have a DMX in function?

ESP is the logical partner for Vectorworks thanks to the plugins.

Daslight or Sunlight do definately both come with a free visualiser called 3D magic, if you have a DMX interface (not the ECO one) you can indeed select DMX in, and use this to activate the visualiser.

The Daslight/Sunlite visualiser is free to use if you use it with Daslight/Sunlite's programming control system (which is somewhat quirky to use, to say the least).

However if you want to use it with DMX-in from a console then you have to buy their DMX interface.

You can't import designs into it from any other package that I know of.

And I don't think there is a mac version of it either.

Good VW tutorials - theatre based - here at the Cornell University website

It's all in imperial, being American, but is a good starting point and takes you through most of VW Spotlights principal functions
