Midi Keyboard LX control?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am working on a project at college and basically wanted to know...

A.If it is possible to use a midi keyboard to trigger chase sequences using the keys and alter the speed of them with the modulation wheel?

B.How?!

Im using a ETC ION console with fader wing and a normal synthesiser Midi Keyboard. (I can use a mac with software if necessary?)

Many thanks =] Rob

Hi Rob,

I'm not terribly familiar with the ETC ION A quick browse through the manual suggests that It will definitely receive MIDI time code as a clock source and that you can trigger functions if you wish... look at pages 283 in the manual for more detail.

I do know however that there's a piece of software out there called Showcad Artist (http://www.showcad.com/) which offers extremely advanced control via simple note and control change MIDI the kind your keyboard is no doubt outputting.

These systems are installed in hundreds of nightclubs up and down the land using keyboards and touch screens to activate and control chases and cue stacks. (I used one at my local club for a while) I'm not sure about mapping chase speed to the modulation though...

The Showcad does have a free 30 day trial, but I'm not sure of Mac compatibility.

Hope that helps a little.

Another +1 for showcad... Have installed it in a few nightclubs (mainly using a touch screen, but I have used with a midi device) however from my point of view I don't find show cad very intuitive or straightforward to programme as the desks I'm used to.

It is used in a fair amount of gatecrasher (and similar) nightclubs

although very contraversial here on BR. Daslight.com is remarkably easy to activate with midi, and it can start audio tracks or video on each cue button as well as start the lighting cues, it is one of the easiest to learn computer based softwares on the market. It is not recognised by BR because it is from the computer background and not theatre lighting based background, hence it gets shunned.

it's main limitation is no master dimmer fader and no timeline feature.

But for what you are asking, I think this would be a very simple solution, as it also comes with a free visualiser , and no additional hardware is needed to interface the computer with midi.

oh and it is free to download, and has full video tutorials on the website, unlike the professional theatre based software, who when asked about video tutorials, suggested that everybody from a theatre or pro audio background should already know how to use their software.
