Rigging Harnesses

Hi Guys, just a quick one. Wondering if anyone has suggestions on what rigging / fall arrest harnesses they find most comfortable? I think it's becoming time to replace mine so just looking for suggestions really!

I use a Petzl Navaho Bod, which is quite comfy. It depends to some extent on the length of time you are using the harness and the type of clothing you tend to wear under it. Some find that the top straps are uncomfortable when wearing polo shirts.

Likewise, well the black version thereof. Use it for long periods of truss and beam walking, and work-positioning, urm, work, and roped access. Do sometimes find the strap over the shoulders rubs when in t-shirts, but a little readjustment sorts it out just fine.

There are many other types out there, but personally love the Petzl ones, and they do seem to find their way into a considerable number of lampy/riggers kit bags.

I am very naughty, and I still use my trusted Petzl Navaho Vario, with the Chester add-on. Petzl are generally considered to be the ones for working in, but at a cost. In addition to the harness, you will also need a lanyard grillion and an absorbica-y. Everything that I own, with the exception of a few karabiners, is Petzl; pulleys, harness, lanyard, fall arrester. Pretty much made for purpose. By the way, the Vario will be retired in March, and a shiny new Bod Fast will replace it, although not the all-black one because I am sad, but not that sad. (And I don't spot on rock'n'roll gigs).

This has been done - a couple of years ago, but I don't think anything in that thread is out of date yet: Clicky.

That's alright innit? What's so naughty about that?

Wouldn't really matter if you did, other than as a fashion statement you don't need a black harness for that. ;)

I've seen a few guys with hightec gear - always worth looking at stuff other than Petzl even if just for comparison - also slightly cheaper than Petzl

http://www.heightec.com/

Heightec do some interesting stuff. For anyone here who's interested in their kit, this man here would be a good person to whom to drop a PM/email.

Comments have been passed '...it's not a full body harness...', '...it's not a fall arrest harness...', etc. by staff in some of the venues I have visited.

Thought it might be something like that..

They don't know what they're talking about: a Navaho sit harness combined with a Chester is fully compliant with EN361.

The only thing an integrated full body harness has that you to don't get with that is a dorsal attachment point.

Another vote for the Petzl Navaho (mine's a fast, and yes it is all black).

I have however, since I got mine, been introduced to C.A.M.P gear (I dont own any just to add) http://www.camp.it/EN/template01.aspx?codicemenu=585 they look good 9I have seen them in the flesh and are considerably lighter than the Petzl and also about £50 a go cheaper. The guys' that paint the Forth Rail Bridge apparently use them for their comfort and also the fact they go through about one every six months so the price difference works.

Definetly one to try next time mine comes up for replacement.

Can anyone add to this topic with good places to buy harnesses etc from? Preferably real-world shops! I want to invest in a harness, and I'm on a Uk tour at the moment so much of central England is likely to be within travelling distance at some point in the near future - or places near Edinburgh where I live :)

Web Rigging Services are based in Edinburgh and are dealers for C.A.M.P, they will also supply Petzl harnesses and have a fair amount of Petzl accesories (lanyards etc) in stock. They're really nice guys and they'll do your yearly inspections for you too and give you a piece of paper to prove it.

they're the people who I use, them or Flints.

Hope that helps,

Ian
