Russell Howards Good News

Just been watching an episode of Russell Howards good news, and the backdrop is made up of images/videos etc, which seems to be on material of some sort

I was wondering how it is done in this situation, as at one part in a show a guest comes out from one side of the stage, a flap opens and the video or picture moves with it...

Is it just green screened and edited later or some kind of projection/videos screen?

I'm fairly certain that it's all projected, so when they come in through the flaps the image is simply moving on the flaps as they move. I think that from the angles you see the 'dead' image simply falls out of the cameras sight. I don't think it's any cleverer than that.

However much I dislike this program, I did wonder the same myself!

But, looking at a picture like this, where does his shadow go. Please excuse me if im being really quite silly, its getting late!. If it was projected from the front there would be a massive shadow, and from a angle above, the image would be too small?

Pete knows better than I but Forkbeard Fantasy did wonderful stuff with 16mm and carousel projections with actors onscreen simply stepping out of the frame into "live" performance. Try to find "The Brittonioni Brothers" videos on the web.

They used multiple projections of the same scene from various angles.

mmm.. I dunno, I think with a wide lens, a projector above and just in-front of him would work,

a friend took a photo (which included a bit of the grid) of the show on facebook but I cant find it now!

notice that he doesn't move. which could give some clue as to how precise the marks are..

It'll be front projection from the grid, with any geometric correction done either in the blending cards on the projectors, or in the media server that probably drives the content to the projectors. At a guess I'd expect that job to probably be a 4 projector blend, 1 on each wing and then two for the centre area of the set. Doesn't necessarily need to be wide angle lenses, as with a blend you'll need less distance to throw by virtue of the fact that you have multiple images stitched to create the overall wide blend. That said I've never spotted the projectors in any of the wide shots that they show, so I'm just using informed judgement.

This sort of thing is common in the corporate and broadcast worlds, and is a relatively easy thing to do.

  • 2 weeks later...

Before I did see a show (the Black album at the national if anyones interested) that had similar walls and that was back projected, and have always been interested to know what the walls were made from as they appeared to be fairly solid (like in this program)

anyone know anymore about that?
