john deans Posted December 7, 2010 Posted December 7, 2010 Over the next few momths I am looking to repalce some rather elderly C audio RA3000's driving an old turbo TMS4 rig, so I want 400 - 600 watts into 8 ohms 750-900 watts into 4 ohms, I do not intend to run 2 ohms very often but want the amps to work ok in that situation. As the rig does not see too much use the budget is limited (£ 300 - 500) each; I will be looking at used equipment probably of fleabay. So what are other blue roomers experiences of suitable amps re relaiablity and sound quality. For starters I m considering QSC RMX or PLX series, Crest, possibly MC2 or crown, I think Macrtechs will be to expensive any other makes?. Oh as this is a hire rig they need to be rider freinldy as well .
Scottish_AV_in London Posted December 7, 2010 Posted December 7, 2010 We use QSC PLX 3102 and 3002 amplifiers.. Both are really rider friendly, handle a few knocks and bumps in their flightcase , and easily repaired when necessary!!! These are really good value for money, and excellent for the job they do. We also stock Lab Gruppen FP2600 + 3400 amplfiers again will drive within the range your looking at, also very rider friendly, if a little more expensive than the PLX range, but I personally feel that to benefit from longevity in kit you need to make the initial investment to guarantee the life of the asset.

In your cicumstances, just because they are elderly shouldn't be a reason on its own to replace them - you are not going to be able to afford lightweight SMPS replacements, so whatever you get will be secondhand heavy lumps, probably much like you have now. As far as macros go, you should be able to find 3600VZs at or just over the top end of your budget, depending on condition.
adamski1010 Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 The QSC PLX2 series are good amps and would do everything that you needed of them. They would also cut down on the weight of your current amp rack by a considerable amount. QSC Support is second to none. I've got a fair few PLX amps and I've never had a problem with them, even though they get thrown in and out of the back of vans for dryhire almost everyday. CheersAdam
