Fat Frog fader to control a bell?

Hi there

Sorry but here I go again!

I think this has been covered somewhere before but I have searched and can't find it

Bearing in mind I'm a sound person and have a very limited knowledge of LX stuff

Please could someone tell me in very simple steps (even if it's "no you can't!") how to make a channel fader on a 'Fat Frog' go from OFF to 100% as soon as the fader leaves the OFF position

I am trying to use a lighting channel to ring a 240v AC bell (like a fire alarm type bell) as an effect

So I suppose what I'm asking is can a channel fader be programmed/used as an ON/OFF switch?

Thanks in advance

Anton

Thanks boatman - how do I set the dimmer curve please, I don't have the manual with me at home

Cheers

Either set the dimmer curve to switch or programme the appropriate channel at 100% into a submaster and use the submaster flash button.

The dimmer is not the Fat Frog, but whatever dimmer packs you are using. As far as I know the fader transfer characteristic on the Fat Frog cannot be changed from linear, however your dimmer packs might be programmable. For example the Zero 88 Chilli can be set to a variety of curves including 'switch', but don't forget to set it back after you have finished your run. It's all dependent on what dimmer packs you have.

The simplest option is the flash button. This will cause the selected channel to go to 100% provided you have the Flash function set to 'Flash' and not 'Solo'.

You could just use a switch pack instead of a dimmer pack.

Alternatively I have a 0-10v analogue source from a demux switching an opto relay providing switching for similar functions. (Mine currently connects to a contactor for switching a UV lamp).

I take it you have done a risk assessment re the bell sounding like a fire alarm bell too!

Thanks everyone for the replies and advice

Sorry boatman I missed that - I'll check on the dimmer packs when I'm next at the venue - we have different types in the rack so I'll check each type

Then I'll try and learn a bit more about this 'lampy stuff' :cold:

Time we upgraded the system I think!!!

Cheers

Anton

provided you have the Flash function set to 'Flash' and not 'Solo'.

Which would still set the channel to 100% as required - just turn off all the other channels at the same time

That only happens if you have the flash mode set to solo, if you set it to flash all other channels stay as they are.

I think that's what Nick meant.

Another thing that you will need to bear in mind if you are using a dimmer pack, is the type of load that you are adding (most probably a mostly inductive one from the coils in the bell) are not well suited to dimmer packs, you may find that the bell rings all the time, or possibly does not ring at all. The use of an off stage load lamp to increase the resistive load will help immensely.
