Any scaffolding or access equipment supplier will be cheaper than theatrical suppliers for this kind of kit.

Or Metal stock holders - plenty stock tube of the right diameter and wall thickness.

I just got a price off Kee for £550 all in for a 2x2x2 ali frame + clamps etc,

I somehow missed the generation place but I may just give them a call tomorrow. We do happen to have quite a bit of clamps, doughty and normal scaff. It's just working out what we want and need now.

I happen to have 4x2m poles in steel which I could possibly use in the base.. are there any reasons why I shouldn't have a steel base and uprights, top and supports in ali other than weight?

@Kerry

Most aluminium towers are noisy, wobbly and more importantly not designed to have people climbing on the outside of them.

Any scaffolding or access equipment supplier will be cheaper than theatrical suppliers for this kind of kit. As most theatrical suppliers will just be getting it from them anyway and not with much of a discount.

I did consider that, until I did PASMA last week and they very much didn't like the idea of people (17+) climbing any form of tower with no PASMA, even is it was the external climb stuff which hardly anyone stocks.

Combining steel and Ali is fine, though you are hardly saving much by using it. I'd recommend giving a few people a ring round, for a 2 x 2 x 2 structure you shouldn't be paying much at all. Even in Ali.

PASMA are an odd bunch, they try to come across as the official training provider, when in fact they are a private company out to make a profit. They do set minimum prices for training courses after all. There are plenty of other training courses for towers that are not done by PASMA.

As with most H & S things, it is down to your risk assessment and training, these courses prove competence(just about), they do not make you competent.

What type of tower was it that you could climb externally? I honestly don't know of any type where you can without tipping it. Let alone not having any fall protection on the outside.

Well I am having a meeting on Thursday to get something a bit firmer sorted but 550 did seem a touch on the pricey side.

Someone did ask about do we have to buy? we don't HAVE to but if we have it it does mean that we can then make more bits an pieces, solid frames, higher deck.(for my sins, but hey its not my idea)

It HAD TO BE PASMA! (grumpy work face)

It was mentioned that .. oh wait .. no I got that wrong, its late, and I confused "bothsides" and "ladder side".

When did anyone last meet an aerialist with a PASMA ticket? It's performance not work.

I was suggesting using individual units together with ali scaff bar as stabilisation and not thinking you would build a 40 foot tower onstage. Wander down to Universal and ask for help from their scaff foreman. They may well have Kee clamps lying around and might be glad of a break from house-painting scaff queries.

They may do you a decent hire deal. In all my years of building scaff I have never owned one single scaff bar, clips yes, bars no.

Think laterally, go where the knowledge exists, as Dr Johnson said, and don't get confused. It's fun, remember.

Is that a 2m cube - with multiple rungs on each side or similar? Hard to judge what the price is for.

We use our local SGB / Harsco, an Ali pole is about £36, and most of those Alvin clamps are about £5-7, so for 2m frame cube you'd need 4 poles & 8 clamps, about £200 before any side rungs. Poles would be less if you made it from steel, but it'd be heavy.

That would be a 2x2x2 cube with a diagonal on 2 sides@ about 2.8m. We are likley to add some bits but I hope can could get away with what we have.

Making various calls now.

Should be able to build that with Alvin clamps - give your local Harsco branch a call, they've always been cheapest for us, and the delivery is never a problem as they have a lot of regional branches.

If you're looking for those scaff clamps. Marlborough in Woodstock have quite a few from various fitups. Not working there anymore but could give you the contact details of the guy who took over me? Also, last time I hired some scaff bits from our local hire company (down Electric Avenue ), the quality of what they supplied was rubbish. In case you were thinking of going down that line...

I got Steel for £22 a barrel of Harco in December and the right-angle tees from Alvin Clamps for £5.70 each. Someone is making a LOT of profit from you at £550 even with ali poles!

Well I have decided that Alvin klamps are the way to go and I am getting ali from a local place, as most places are a not too bad price but add on delivery and it's quite a bit,

In the end I needed 14m as we made some design changes, HAVING said all that I may just Give Harco a call in the AM and get a final price check.
