synlights
hey im new :) but basically ive been given a 1k NYE production budget that id be interested in seeing how you'd spend.. the scenario A NIGHTCLUB 1200 capacity main room with robe light rig (scans moving heads, martin attomics)/ 12 le maitre angle pods / 4 20ft wide projection screens (doubled up) backed with resolume / v4 .. / martin RGB Laser .. /standard dj sound setup (does it matter in this respect?) UV cannons / inflatable stars / white - red - blue draping is already readily available at no cost so include if you wish thought about pyros - what type is best for NYE BANG inflatable balls with confetti stretchy fabric balloon drops :)
TonyMitchell
is this homework? :)
J Pearce
Unless I'm very mistaken as to the identity of the poster it's not homework, just a knowledgable tech asking for creative stimulus. Pyro wise I'd go for something glittery, maybe with a nye themed glitter/confetti/balloon drop as well. Projection - it'd be rude not to have a countdown or clock! Maybe morph visuals around a clock or time, or have your effects time based, or have a year-gone-by sort of thing. Some fireworks visuals would complement the pyro nicely. Can you program shapes for your laser? Maybe have '2011' scanning around?
charlyfarly
I don't think you can blame Tony for being skeptical considering that the OP's profile offers....err...not much information :) The centrepiece is the countdown, projections always go down well though from past experience, linking up to a radio broadcast of the "bongs" of Big Ben is strangely quite a fraught experience especially if you have to deal with a DJ who is suffering from allaboutme.com! It is worth checking out if there are any local regulations in regards to pyro use, sometimes the local fire chief likes to be informed of this. Also bear in mind positioning; drunken revellers always seem to miraculously appear too close to the firing zone at the last minute or jump up and get too close to that ledge that you thought was safely out of reach. Jivemaster
Your angle pods will fire the "messy" cartridges from LeMaitre but not the fire ones (Gerbs etc) If you intend to sync to real time then you need a real time sound from Big Ben or all your predictions by radio controlled clock are out by a bit. Also there is no certainty that your chosen radio station will actually carry the chimes. I was in mid Wales once with a contract that said "must play NYE chimes from the radio" and the 2300 news announced that mechanics were hoping to get the chimes working for midnight -fortunately they did! Thomas1987
At least you're aware in advance! Just been invited on Facebook to our venue's xmas extravaganza... including apparently a "Santas grotto" , "Indoor snowstorm wonderland" and a sleigh. None of which I was aware of! Nothing like finding out your future headaches via facebook! On the bright side also discovered that Christmas dinner is being served all day, which I will be having several helpings of! To be honest, for really high impact, could look at dressing - we brought in a pretty good UV dressing company for around that budget, took a full days rig and derig but looked amazing. Otherwise, silver confetti shots, projections. Look at how you can dress the outside of the building too?
azlan
I would look back on the year at any nights where extra stuff has been bought in and look at replicating anything that went down especially well, and also some kind of projection/audio for a clock and something special (pryo, balloons etc..) for when it actually is midnight
lightsource
12 le maitre angle pods....... ....snip...... pyros - what type is best for NYE BANG 2x LeMaitre Silver Jets per second for the last 5 seconds of the video countdown clock. Then 2x Maroons (in a tank of course) for Zero hour, tied in with a confetti (or baloon) drop from the ceiling. If you can, I'd also add some gerbs for Zero hour, they'll put a lot of smoke in the air for the Robe's
Junior8
tied in with a confetti (or baloon) drop from the ceiling. I agree nothing beats a balloon net. Have recording of Big Ben available and set up in case any link goes down. I like the idea of a year gone by projection. The remarks about drunken revelers are apposite so I probably wouldn't bother with the maroon tank personally. What about some bubble machines? Why not revive the oil slide? (Or as we used to call it the liquid light show - pass me that Aldis 1000) - there must be a modern version about I expect. Taken together with some Patt 202s if anybody has got any left you could have a very retro evening.
lightsource
.........so I probably wouldn't bother with the maroon tank personally. What, so just fire the maroons into the audience and 'see who dances first' ;)

RMSaudiovisual
Obviously use what the others have said in terms of Pyro but for me it would be stretchy fabric all the way. If you can backlight these as well, they will look awesome. It doesnt have to be anything OTT, just UV cannons on White would be fine, basic but fine. There was a company that Coolwaters in Taunton used for a gig they did a few years back in Brighton who were spot on.
sleepytom
£1k? What's that supposed to cover? The full production costs? or just Pyro / glitter / inflatables etc? Live sync up is a nightmare - the best way I've done NYE time keeping is to ignore the "real world" and have a video based clock / countdown - send a permanent iso feed of this to confidence monitors for the stage manager / compare / DJ. This lets them know how long it is until they need to do whatever it is that they are going to do at midnight. At 15 seconds to midnight take the clock live to the projection screens. Everyone does a countdown then the DJ (or someone near him who is less drunk) plays the Big Ben Bongs from an MP3 file. All the punters are happy as the countdown on screen is in sync with the MC / crowd shouting countdown, really that is all that matters.
Jivemaster
From experience you can leave a channel on pfl with a radio station hoping to catch them trying to catch the chimes However it's fraught, and you never quite know which channel will actually carry the bells. Apparently BBC R4 is a good option but I've never tried it. I have a cd from music factory http://www.mastermixdj.com/ with a full and clean midnight chime. If you press go at exactly the right moment the first hour chime happens at the right moment. With this disc you get only the full "Westminster" chime then the twelve hour chimes. If you use a radio station they will likely chat in the gaps in the hour chimes as the wait seems to go on for ever! The whole 12 hour chimes are not usually needed, the event dynamic usually takes over one of two chimes in! It's up to you to fit the chimes into the evening schedule. I used to use some bits of The Final Countdown by Europe to bridge an evening's programme into the chimes -corney but it worked for me! See what the rest of the venue will be doing! I've seen a Maitre D' trying to get people to dance and sing Auld L S while the bar staff tried to give out free bubbly -neither worked. Likewise glitter and streamers get into drinks, Draping ALS dancers in streamers seems OK though!
