Fane 2-Way Trapezoidal 10 Reflex Enclosure

I am considering building a pair of http://www.faneinternational.com/downloads...inchTrapres.pdf to face forward on our carnival float (as the speakers at the moment only face sideways) so the float can be heard from ahead.

They seem quite expensive to build in comparison to some pre-built speakers

Does anyone have an opinion of these?

What you'll end up with is a pair of boxes which are far superior to a set of no-name far-east made cabinets.

1) Built from 18mm ply they will be much tougher than something made from furniture grade chipboard.

2) The drivers used are a better product with specs you can trust.

3) The xover used will not die at the first sign of stress.

We built a similar speaker using 2*10" MBs for extra power and usually use active X-overs (with subs...) though we have a couple of modified Lynx passives to run them direct up to 300w. We will continue to use Fane when possible since the easily available (locally) commercial Beymas - while similiar - just do not seem to deliver the clarity and punch without oddities, or I admit maybe we have not spent sufficient design time on the last additions.

I am curious as to what you can use for the horn. The last time I visited the site there were changes in availabilty of the "plastics" since the buyout by PrecDev.

Nonetheless followiing the instructions, with good craftsmanship, handles etc and paint you will have something with little resale value (cough cough!!) because of no label but will last and last and last and should sound good.

PS they used to supply a sticky label "Powered by FANE", got one in my pencil tray still! And reasonably priced recone kits !!
