Lighting equipment advice

Do you have a permanent venue to put the equipment in, or is it temporarily installed into a space as and when you need it?

Something to control the lights with and something to rig them on would be the obvious answers, but we need to know a little more about your situation before we can offer meaningful advice.

Since the OP describes themselves, according to their profile, as a "Freelance theatre technician based in Glasgow" I would have thought he/she should already know, or have a fair idea of, the answer.

Cheers

I think she's a student, rather than a freelance technician, as she mentions that it's her student drama society who are looking for the purchasing advice. (Students and 'weekend warriors' describing themselves as freelancers is a bit of a bug-bear of mine, but that's not relevant to this thread so let's not go there!)

From what I gather she's worked in a venue I'm familiar with ... that used to have loads of people that could advise her and no longer does ... typical cut-backs

Still - there's loads of people in Glasgow that'd be happy to offer advice - get in touch with one of us :P

Hello,

Apologies for the lack of information in my original post. To clarify, I am an ex-university student, and am trying to help out the theatre society, who are in the process of trying to buy lighting equipment. I was really looking for good places to buy dimmer racks and lighting consoles, or any advice anyone may have for buying equipment for not too much. I am new to professional theatre so was just hoping some more experienced people would be able to offer any words of wisdom...

Hi Tamsyn. I suspect the snag is that it's kind of unusual for somebody who isn't too technical to post asking what lights to buy and where from. The whole subject is so complex that although sometimes the solutions are quite simple and straightforward, the exact answer you want depends so much on what you actually want to buy. Some products we'd suggest you buy from one dealer, while others might be best from another. Maybe you've been given a shopping list from someone in the society and your job is just to source what they have listed - or maybe nobody knows what to buy and you're trying to do best guess?

In all honesty, we can probably help - but you've given us no information at all on which to base even the most basic helpful response.

You've bought some kit, and want more. This is good - but did you buy some horrible nasty kit that you can't use and want to do better, or is what you bought excellent, but you just don't have enough? Far too many guesses for us. I hope you can see our dilemma - can you help?

The kind of information we need to know in order to offer any meaningful help is:

1) What are you trying to achieve? What shows are you puting on? Bands, drama, dance, talks?

2) What equipment do you already have?

3) Is the kit going to be used by someone technical or does it have to be (forgive the expression) "idiot-proof"?

If you'd like to have a stab at those then we'll happily offer some suitable advice.
