c.cam108
I am hoping to hang a short (<1m) length of ali tube from a structural I-beam for a 1-day show. The beam forms part of a pitched roof (<20degrees)so obviously each hanging point will be a different length. There are wooden beams perpendicular on top so there is no problem with anything slung over sliding down. For a one-off I am not looking for anything custom-made, and the load will be 2 or 3 lighting fixtures, so max. 20kg. What would be the best way to achieve this. I have a couple of ideas in my head but want to see what the experts think. Colin C
AndyJones
A pair of these would do the job. Easy life!
c.cam108
Sorry, I forgot to say in my original post - the bar needs to be parallel to the beam, and dropped at least a few inches to clear a false ceiling grid (tiles will be removed to access the beam. Andrew C
Not as I read the OP Andy. He needs different length drops to achieve a horizontal ali bar hanging below the beam, not across it. I could be wrong...

I could be wrong...Spot on. A concurrent post has been automatically merged from this point on. Elsewhere in the hall there is a trus hung from two of these and steel rope, but I'm looking for something temporary, such as two different length roundslings, but getting the bar horizontal would be tough, or two ratchet straps tensioned by the weights of the fixtures, but they aren't really designed for that. Seano
What would be the best way to achieve this. You need a truss, two motors, and a rigger! Just kidding... There are lots of ways to do it, what have you got? What would you use if the beam were level? Will you be drifting the bar a little (or a long) way below that roof beam? If so, top of my list for something so light would be 4mm or 6mm steel drifts with a swaged eye at one end and one of these at the other. You could also use a bullet (Strandvise) backed up with a dog, or you could use dogs (cheap but fiddly) with a suitable thimble. (Number, spacings and torque all specified in the instructions that come with them - never saddle a dead horse.)To state the bleedin obvious, it goes: Basket on beam -> (adjustable) steel wire rope drift -> clamp on lighting bar. Alternatively you could use one or two clutch chains (which would definitely be the way to go if you were dead-hanging a 200kg lighting truss instead of a 20kg bar). dunk_1984
I remember being demo'd adjustable steels by AC a couple of years ago (they were on the PLASA stand last year as well).Alternatively, an appropriately sized gripple and wire. http://www.gripple.com . Suspended from a pair of girder clamps or spanset/steel basket.

Requires care, obviously. You'd only need one, you don't need both sides adjustable to level the bar.

The wire rope goes through holes in the ceiling and at the other end is a pair of karabiners to remove the truss when it is not in use. such as ... ...two ratchet straps tensioned by the weights of the fixtures, but they aren't really designed for that.Actually, subject to risk assessment blah blah yadda yadda, it can be an option to hang on a ratchet strap. I'll bear them all in mind, especially your first suggestion Seano. :P
