Daft egg-sucking question but you ARE telling the laptop to send the signal to the VGA out instead of/as well as the laptop screen, are you not??

Have to tried shutting the laptop screen and opening it again for some reason my acer will only output once the screen has been closed and opened again

On the F keys there should be a symbols with 2 squares,1 open 1 shaded,hit that key whilst holding the fn key,on my machine its F5.

I think agreeing with others here, only Macs will generally automatically output externally when connected. Most Laptops need to be told to output externally, either by holding down the fn button as well as the correct F key (there will be 3 modes to scroll through Laptop only, Projector only and Both), or going via display output options and selecting one of the 2 dual output modes (duplicate or extend).

 

Also connecting the laptop to the Projector before booting up should send the signal through automatically but will probably not give you an image on the Laptop, so you would still need to switch.

If running Windows 7 it is a universal shortcut to press the windows key and P to change the output modes.
