old lighting

Q - Are PAR lanterns still used in theatre, R & R and corporate events etc these days?

A - Yes, most certainly.

Q - Are these lanterns that I've been offered worth anything?

A - How long is a piece of string...?

Quite honestly only you, or someone with more experience can say by LOOKING at the kit.

If it's in good condition, and works and would pass a (theatre tech's) PAT then they may well be worth a look.

If they come with PARSafe connectors, mesh grille, clamp, frame & bond etc, all the better.

If they're beaten to bits, dented, rusty, missing bits etc, then probably the opposite.

Q - Would I pay much more than a tenner for a decent condition PAR 64 (incl working lamp)?

A - highly unlikely.

Without lamps and other nice bells and whistles they're pretty much worthless. I've just given away 20 basic Thomas PAR64 cans.

You can buy a brand-new shiny PAR64 can with colour frame for £15.

they are ex install around 500 par cans with dimmers (pulsar). I am only after the truss but they want rid of the lot, I have to remove lighting anyway so depends on price
Er, so the question wasn't really about just the lanterns then??

Taking truss and dimmers into account that would make a HUGE difference...

However, if the question is basically "Is it worth me trying to sell on these 500 par cans once I've stripped them from the truss" then I refer the honourable gentlemen to my first reply - depends on the condition.

I suspect that Fleabay may be your friend here - there's always someone looking for a bargain, so lump them in lots of 10 and auction them with a starting price of a fiver per lot - you'd maybe be surprised at how many that actually sell for (over the odds) a reasonable price to you...

just to add that lots of 6 or 12 might be slightly better, or at least more convenient for those purchasing.

yes the question was about the lanterns. I have already done a deal on the 100m of box truss :) selling them off in small batches would not be worth my time or the space they would take up,so will leave them on site, but have put a offer in on the dimmers as they should shift quiet fast

cheers

Hell as long as the cans are in working order and dont look to badly bashed up I would buy them (alas ive done a bit to much spending allready, and we are 4000km (random guess) apart) and ive bought my current stock of 56 cans (40 of them) by doing this for only $5 ea fully wired just missing a clamp, saftey, lamp and gel frame. But still worked out cheaper than buying brand new.

If the cans come with bells and whisles attached (lamps, clamps, safetys) then you could get yourself a decent price for them on eBay. And with 500 of them list them in bulk lots of say 16(or even more) and then say if people want a smaller quantity they are welcome to contact you and arrange that.

Also spread the 500 over a few weeks as ive listed the same item one week and no bids what so ever then the next week after I relisted it I had 10 bids and the price skyrocketed, so you could make a decent amount of money by selling them.

Pulsar dimmer and switching packs do always seem to sell on ebay.

If they are newer models in nice condition and are the 'status' versions, you will achieve considerably more for them than if they are tatty old rust-riddled packs with the fuse holders ripped to shreds.
