dsa6502 Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 Hi there, We are doing a school production of Aladdin in December and we would like to have some kind of special effect each time that the Genie enters. (about 4 times in total) Something like a puff of smoke coming up from the ground. We need an effect that is safe to use in school and is realitively cheap as we have no budget. Any ideas would be great. Cheers

Dodgecaliber Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 As a member of the Blue Room firing squad, your going to need some kind of budget. If the director wants a gerb or something then it will need to be made clear that if they want it, they gotta pay for it. I'm unable to get into your profile at the moment, but if your a student then forget it. H&S, school management, age and lack if training will prevent you from using smoke/pyros. I'd suggest Co2 confetti, fire alarms like it, easy to use with nowt danger. Dodge

rossmck Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 H&S, school management, age and lack if training will prevent you from using smoke/pyros. This depends a lot on the school.... I know a number of schools that still use Pyro in performances - so it is possible.. Obviously they have risk-assessments and have various rules associated with it - i.e. they require they're fired by someone 18 or over (although that seems to be a newer 'rule' - they used to allow several S5/S6 students to fire them) That said it's not something to be treated lightly; but with proper risk management there's no reason why pyro cannot be used in a school environment. I'd have thought smoke machines in Schools were still relatively common ? if you don't have one perhaps see if someone will hire you a decent vertical smoke machine that could be used for the appearance of the genie - combined with some appropriate lighting and you may be able to use it to mask his entry entirely making him appear from behind the smoke.
guy.joseph Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 As per my previous post Clicky Clicky I'm doing cinderella in a show. With help from these guys, I'm going for a Showtec Jetfog (or something like that) vertical smoke machine and an Atomic 3000s Strobe. I know that there is no reason that schools couldn't use pyro, but it's really not worth the effort in a lot of cases.
