QSC GX5 Amplifier

I'm looking at getting a QSC GX5 amplifier as it ticks all the boxes I require, price, power and more importantly weight.

Does anyone have any experience of this model of amplifier and any comments please?

Thanks.

What speakers are you planning to power with it? They GX series is QSC's budget range, they do what they say on the tin; but sonically are not the best amps in the world.

Thanks for the replies so far, it's to power Wharfedalepro LX15 & EV ZX4 (not at the same time) both 400w RMS speakers and it's to replace a C-MARK MR2450 amplifier 450w per channel @ 8ohms, 700w per channel @ 4ohms.

If you were satisfied with the C-Mark you will be happy with the QSC I'm sure.

The C-mark's are actually very reliable and capable amps for what they are. Heavy though. I've never used (or considered) the GX5 due to hearing bad things about them. I can't substantiate any of that due to not using them though. Sorry if that's not entirely helpful.

To be honest the weight is the only reason to make a change, C-MARK = 26kg, GX5 = approx 13kg (plus an extra 50w but can't imagine I'd really notice that).

I've done a side by side comparason with my C-MARK and an EV CP2200 and I couldn't hear any difference at all at low or high volume levels.

I've run the C-MARK into a dummy load with a signal generator on the input and when watching the output on a scope it's totally flat from 5hz up to 25khz at around 250w per channel, haven't got a bigger dummy load to push it any harder.

So from my experience if you have a light wallet and big muscles (or a lot of roadies) don't knock the C-MARK amps I say.

Any more GX5 comments welcomed please, or anything else similar that's light weight and you have had direct experience with?

Ours was purchased to bring a couple of old unused Bose 802's back to life for adding music/movie playback and light speech reinforcement to a smallish room. I've not been able to run the system to silly levels, so I can't vouch for the power spec's. I can say it doesn't sound as "clean" or "clear" as the Crown XLS802's we use in our main system, but it works well enough.

If you're really looking to save weight then why not look at a Class D? Perhaps Thomann has something of that kind of technology for similar money?

I put a GX5 in to the last Speakerplans amp meet (no 3 from memory) and it faired well on the power spec, came out as it's listed.

Mine's not had a huge amount of use, but it does what it says on the tin.. budget amp, budget features (no clip limiters etc..), sounds ok and so far no issues with

it, imo a barging at the sub £300 price tag it was at (couple of years ago). Build quality is generally good and above what I would have expected at the price point.

Certainly not based on the PLX range as someone suggested, it's a conventional PSU not a switcher.

Cheers

Matt
