Rear projection losses???

Background:

I work in a school who are looking to put on a small tour round primary schools with their self written panto...

Projection seems the best option for their "scenery" as they want 4-6 scenes, and we would have only an hour or so to set up at each venue...

The halls we are working it have very little in the way of black out/darkening, so there will be ambient room lighting.

We are hiring in a couple of stands with LED pars for a bit of colour, there is little else we can do as in 2 halls we have a single 13A socket to run everything from.

Im looking at what sort of power projector we will need, and is we have anything in house that will fit the bill,

We will need rear projection, and will be hiring in a 8'x6' fast fold for this, however I have not done rear projection before, is there any loss of brightness from the trasmission through the cloth??

Im looking at short throw, this would be easier in some of the limited spaces.

There will also be ambient lighting behind the screen

at the moment looking at a 4K projector at around 4-6feet from the screen, as we have these in house.

budget pretty much anything reasonable, its a "community link" project so can squeeze a bit more form them!

You get better brightness from rear projection than from front projection if you are viewing on-axis to the projector, but it drops off quite quickly as you go off to the sides.

Because of this rear-proj is better for high ambient light conditions if you can get the space behind the screen.

You will want to make a blackout "tunnel" around the rear of the screen and the projector if there is light behind the screen. This will greatly improve the contrast.

cheers, Ill look into that, drapes are no proble, I can get them in abundance, just a quick to errect support structure that I need.

Like I said I only have and hour or so to single handedly set up the screen/projection lighting sound (only SFX playback, but still to be done) so looking at stuff to be quick as possible.

I have had chance to visit a couple of the halls, and have worked I should be able to reduce most of the ambient light in the projection area by masking the sides alone rather than try to do the full tunnel, as most of the ambient light when the hall lights are off comes from the side windows.
