Good Public Relations

A recurring topic for discussion on the Blue Room is the problem of complaints about noise levels from nearby residents. I've just had an example of a good way to handle such situations.

I live about a quarter mile from the campus of the local university. On Saturday afternoon/evening there's going to be an outside concert there by the band "Powderfinger". A couple of days ago we got this note in our letterbox:

By explaining what's going on, giving times and even a hotline number for people with questions, comments and complaints I think they've gone a long way to keeping things civil and I'll wager they don't get many complaints. Certainly, a straw poll of a few neighbours indicates that most people are pretty cool with the whole thing--many have expressed the wish they had tickets! (It's a sell out by the way).

Anyhow, this obviously wouldn't work for late night venues with live regular live music--but even there, effective communication would probably help.

I'll have to see how much I hear tomorrow!

I've posted flyers like these before an event at Cheltenham Racecourse. Most people were happy to receive them but had only positive things to say, and the few who I met who were unhappy just wanted to vent their anger and then never rang to complain, so it certainly cut the statistics even if I did get a few earfuls!
