Two Way Radios
That's a novel idea. Use phones as two way radios? If the range is the same as mine here, then I can't see how these would work in a theatre size building - they run out of steam going through my walls. Are these different? My other question, not knowing this model, is can one be heard by all the others at the same time? If so - this could be handy. The only snag as I see it is they aren't walkie talkies - you cannot just grab one and yell, you have to select who you want to talk to, press a few buttons and wait for them to answer - or have I got it wrong?
Your close,

Turn them on select radio mode and your off. You can broadcast on channels like a normal radio and if you choose, you can send texts and talk directly to another radio. Coverage is the same as any other unlicensed half decent radio.

The one good thing is the radios will stand unto all sorts of abuse. Dust and water resistant too!

Exact same layout and operating functions as real tetra radios and there is tetris and bowling too for between ques!

"Plus point about the Direct Connect service that must be emphasized upon is that this service works anywhere and anytime and its coverage ranges up to 6 miles and it is not necessary for users to be connected to the network in order to communicate via the walkie-talkie. This is a very useful service as users can use it to communicate in times of emergency, network outrage or when traveling in remote areas that have no Nextel coverage, this something users can't find in other phones making this phone unique in its own way"

The Nextel system is actually built with Motorola iDEN hardware. Handsets on the network can operate on the Despatch part of the network as PTT two way radios, selecting a talkgroup like Tetra Radios, or operate in Mobile Phone Mode.

"Direct Connect" was not a feature of iDEN handsets when I last worked on system, (2000), however I would assume that for "Direct Connect" to work with these radios, all users have to have same talkgroup ID and a discrete single frequency programmed to operate on, for all users to hear each other. (just like Tetra).

Hence you may well end up in same issues the Paulears outlined with PMR 446 radios if there are lots in your neigbourhood.

See Wikipedia Motorola iDEN.
