ceecrb1
Ok, so the boss is finally realising that while our OB truck is a really nice peice of kit, he aint gonna ge the champions league contracts that his delusions lead him to believe. finally hes starting to agree with us that our truck would be absolutly brilliant for live corporate gigs, dinners, galas, concerts etc.. however for this we are missing some basic things we wouldnt normally need in a broadcast enviroment... such as compostie and VGA to sdi convertors with genlock (time base correctors) for the usual office powerpoint / home dvd to be injected into our SDI SD truck. As usual... the boss wants this done on the cheap.. so who knows of any (much) cheaper sources for this kind of kit rather than paying broadcast rates? 2nd hand wouldnt be a problem as long as its not too bashed up, reliable is more important to us than looking pretty! BlueShift
Are the usual Analog Way processors out of your budget? Converting things to SDI isn't cheap - even 'on the cheap'. Then again, thats why cheap AV systems don't tend to use SDI at all...
ceecrb1
yeah I know, its causeing problems... only for the bosses wallet. I even looked into putting screen monkey into the titler in the ob truck, but as there is no audio out and its pretty old, I´m not sure it would be too reliable for running a few dvds off in a gig... plus the output card only activates with the propietry software running... which is stills only. (except for credit scrolls). The real shame is that a 2nd hand beaten up hippotizer would be perfect.. especially as there are no media servers of any kind here in valencia (amd much of spain) so its a thing we could hire out on the side without the truck..... seen one on used lighting at 6500... but boss complained at 3000$ per TBC+analogue-digi all in one I found on tinterweb. peternewman
Will some of the TV One stuff not do the trick? I think its at the cheaper end. Or could you do something with a Blackmagic card and run the DVDs/PowerPoint on the PC? Although IIRC they dropped the virtual desktop outputting via the Blackmagic card in the more recent driver versions for some reason.
ceecrb1
In the end, been told clearly this morning that If I cant work it out for free with everything we have in the building.. the truck goes without, he wants to spend 0€... The only option I have is take an avid airspeed for the truck, but we only have one AD-DA unit, so if I take that out of the studio and into the truck.. the studio is without.... this is a loosing battle. nickjones
Powerpoints don't have to be super fast, so what about a computer with a video card that can output SDI, and a super cheap capture card?
ceecrb1
I am thinking that... as there is a pretty "old" pc used as a titler still in the studios doing nothing.. I can try breathing some life into that.. no idea on its specs though, quite possibly has windows 95 or 98!!!!
ceecrb1
In the end looks like we´ll go with a matrox product called a "convert DVI" Dvi in, comp, y/v and SDI out with genlock. roughly €700 At least then I can use any old laptop on the day and route any old dvd/ powerpoint/logo etc etc through it with zero effort.. just patch it and some DI boxes for audio into the truck and away we go! plus as there is cvbs out it can patch straight into our PVM´s with no sdi-comp conveters. No to keep annoying the boss non stop for €700 untill he gives me it.. or fires me..
nickjones
I doubt anything running Windows 98 (as much as I love it) can capture from a capture card and output SDI.Perhaps a better solution would be to use something more multi-format, perhaps a Composite-SDI and then you can still plug in the laptop, but you don't run into the same issue in 6 months time with someone wishing to plug in their whatever. ceecrb1
Haha.. I tried it, its actually windows NT!!! yeah it has SDI in and out with genlock, a key, fill, the lot.. its a stills titling machine... good old fashioned 90´s style graphics. its a no. nickjones
Powerhouse of a machine! Can the card be perhaps put into something newer?
ceecrb1
yeah was thinking about that, BUT.. the card isnt a "graphics card" and will only activate with its software... I cant find ANY record of the company that made it even existing, let alone drivers etc.the youngest file I found on the pc was date stamped 1999...... I must admit I CAN use it as a quick and easy (static) logo/background generator.. but we have a far more up to date titler in the truck already which can do this, and the grassvalley desk can store images and very short videos.. so seems more like its going to the skip. Its mostly been used to lable individual takes when filming in the studios, rather than onscreen live graphics..
