LEDJ : DMX LED - RGB Flood

Hi chaps / chapesses

Rather than burn money hiring LED batterns for my cyc lighting for panto this year, I was looking at the above mentioned flood lights (actually in the 2009 CPC catalouge page 599) to do the job and was seeing if anybody here has used them or knows if they are any good!

We have a load of the LEDJ par 64,s - and for the cost I think they are pretty good. Im only slightly worried about the beam angle. Of course I dont expect them to behave like an asymetrical flood light, but at the same time , if its that narrow then theres no point.

They have to be LED because space up in the air is gonna be tight and regular cyc floods will diperse to much heat.

I repeat, if I NEED to hire - ie 1044's or the like - I will, but I just think it would make more sense to buy some stock. Im not looking for a debate on what to use / whats best!! Id just like some input from end users of this product! Merci! :-)

The cyc will actually be hung 0.5 Meter upstage from a large cargo netting backdrop, so the light output 'evenness' dosent have to be perfect. Its more to do with creating a visual depth to the stage behind the lit cago net.. So a notion of day / night and so on. Not a clean canvas to be lobbing clouds / moons and stars gobo / projections onto!! Did that last year!

Cheers

Dom

You will have 2 problems compared to "pro" LED battens - they are not all that bright, and the beam angle is quite narrow. (They use the same LEDs as the parcans so it's that sort of beam angle).

Also I haven't used this exact unit but similar units have bad colour fringing around the edges of the beam.

What about some of the more "budget" LED battens... There's definitely fixtures similar to the 1044 (not as bright but similar beam angles) out there... I used some 'no name' chinese LED battens a while ago hired to me by a local corporate events company and other than the fact that I had to bodge a way of hanging them on a lighting bar I was surprisingly impressed...

Right ok , thanks for the info so far.

Ross - I did spend ages looking at the spec of the other batterns , but on every type, regardless of which it was -all the beam angles were the same @ 40 degrees.

Tim, I understand your point about same LEDS /similar angle - that is what im worried about!!!! Foe the PARS, the narrow beam angle is fine, not worried about that, but im thinking - how bright would those floods be if I used some Silk difusion to widen the beam a bit.

If I could stretch the budget to an entire line of the things side by side, it wouldnt be an issue. Bit of diffusion to take away the harshness. Great!! But there will be gaps -and while the evenness isnt a great concern, I dont wanna see great black holes inbetween each light source!!

The cheap Chinese LED Batons (Similar in design to the ADJ MEGA BAR) are absolutely hopeless in beam angle. The instant you leave a gap larger than about 15cm you will easily notice black spots in between the batons.

Haveing a Bit of diffuser gel stuck on the front does help alot with the brightness/intensity issues and helps with the colour mixing abilitys of the light especially at close range (e.g. uplighting) and helps remove the colour fringes. Definately worth putting it on if you can spare the brightness.
