djtuffer Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 Hi, does anyone have any experience using Sylvania Britearc lamps espcially the BA-250/2 SE? It seems identical in specs to the Philips MSD-250/2 but at £30 less is an atractive proposition. I would hope they are better built than unbranded lamps of a similar price. I know Martin don't spec them for use but Robe and others have in the past. They would be for going in to a couple of moving heads. I'm not to worried if they only give good ouptut for 1000 hours but would hope for stable colour temperature between lamps and good lumen ouput. Thanks
Robin Pratt Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 I've only had a handfull of theses as we usually use the Philips, but I have to say I've had mixed results. Out of a batch of around 6 (I think ) of them, most ran fine for 1200+ hrs but a couple of them exploded rather loudly and messily at only about 80-100 hrs
djtuffer Posted September 10, 2010 Author Posted September 10, 2010 How did you find their output and colour temp compared to the philips? Are they comparable?
Tow Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 They are both made in Belgium. They may be coming out the same factory!
djtuffer Posted September 10, 2010 Author Posted September 10, 2010 I wondered with Osram and Sylvania being the same why they have the BA-250/2 and the HSD-250/80. They seem very similar. I have heard that Sylvania may be their "budget" brand however but not sure if this is correct. I have some EVL ProSpots that have BA-250/2 lamps in them. One is a little cloudy and down on output after 200 hours. I also read on another thread that these run a hotter than the philips lamps so don't work well in some fixtures. Just looking for some first hand experiences.
djtuffer Posted September 13, 2010 Author Posted September 13, 2010 Did a quick unscientific comparison of the BA-250/2 and the MSD-250/2 in the same fixture. The Sylvania had done about 200 hours and the Philips about 10 hours. The Lux output at 5m was about the same for both lamps measured with my cheap lux meter. Interestingly the colour temperature of the Philips looked lower. The Sylvania was a bit more bluish.
ukemaji Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 It's coincidence that both Philips and Sylvania lamps are made in Belgium, totally separate factories. I know as I've worked for both companies. Brite Arc BA 250/2 as good as MSD 250/2 in all respects. Also no link between Osram and Sylvania in Europe, different in the US where they are one company. Sylvania in the US has no link with Sylvania in Europe.
