Along similar lines: What do you think when lighting techs look back to 2003 and 2004 they will think of as the biggest breakthroughs??

What have been the most major developments of 03/04. Will they look back and say I cant believe anyone used DMX instead of earthernet??? etc. etc.

starting with the birth of the Universe.

Actually it starts with the birth of the solar system and our sun not the universe which is much “biggerâ€. Sorry this is just me being picky. :(

Well to be picky, it either started at the birth of the universe with the first wave/partical of light, or with the first incident of light being added to a production not just our solar system.

Nooo, not :( already :( Please don't start me on cosmology :(

I kind of agree about LEDs, although they've been creeping in for a few years now. I still think it's early days for them, though and that the best is yet to come.

Technical things that stand out in my memory so far...

1973 - First school play. Decided then that lights were interesting.

1978 - First lighting "design": Iolanthe at school.

1979 - First "proper" theatre desk: Strand SP60 at the Library in Manchester

1980 - First memory desk: Rank Strand Duet at LAMDA

1981 - Pink Floyd "The Wall" at Earl's Court

1984 - A certain little brown 30 way EFS Celco desk :(

1984 - A live demo of VL1s at Cricklewood to Hughie Lewis & The News' Heart of Rock 'n' Roll :o

1984 - AV projection systems made up of dozens of 35mm slide projectors - no video anywhere in sight :(

1986 - Mark II Celco :( :(

1986 - The Pancan

1989 - Rank Strand Precision Automated Lighting System (PALS) :( :( , soon to be known as the "Purchase Another Lighting System"

1990 - Vari-lite training, which back then was a four week course that you were paid to do :o

1994 - First Artisan operating gig: Barry Manilow's Copacabana at the Prince of Wales.

1999 - First LED torch

I just hope that us LDs and technicians dont get phased out by computers. I scream everytime some one askes me if I know how to program MIDI.

"all we had when I was workin, was those bloody moving heads, lasers, and LEDs. We had to drive to gigs, we didnt have any of these hovering crafts."

"when I was a lad we only had DVDs, Playstations and PC's", You dont know your born" <-----peter kay moment
