barn01 Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 Hi, Silly question alert but if you don't ask..... :D I am looking for advise with hooking up a Haze Machine via DMX to a Jester 24/48. As we have old analogue dimmers and a demux, it's not quite clear to me how I physically setup the DMX cable from the haze machine ( would this plug directly into the Demux unit?). The haze machine I am looking at has to outputs for the haze and the fan. Presumably I need to DMX cables ? Any help most appreciated. Many thanks
karl Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 If the demux has a DMX out or DMX thru then run a cable from that to the hazer. Alternatively run DMX to the hazer first and then from it's DMX out/thru to the demux.

So with this hazer, I could plug a cable into DMX out on the Demux into the DMX IN on the Hazer, and then set up two channels, one for the fan and one for the haze? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FX-1000-haze-machine...=item2c5671b085
jonhole Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 Hi Barn01, The hazer should have a DMX IN and DMX OUT, as should the demux, so it doesn't matter which order you plug these together. Remember you come OUT of the Jester, IN to the first device, then back OUT of this IN to the second device. You don't need to physically wire up the system in the order you want to have them addressed (ie, you can have the desk > hazer > demux even if the demux starts at DMX ch1 and the desk at DMX ch25). Also, you might find the Hazer is 3 pin 'DMX' instead of 5 pin, so you will have to buy or make a 3pin - 5pin jumper and a 5pin - 3pin jumper. These are available online, you local dealer, Maplin etc
jonic222 Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 I'm not sure if the above posts have answered you questions about the two channels on the hazer. Firstly - DMX runs along a single line, and in a single direction. It doesn't matter what order the things in the line are (except the controller must be the first thing). This means that you can plug your system in either as:Jester --> Demux --> HazerorJester --> Hazer --> Demux The Demux and the Hazer will both have DMX In, and should both have DMX Out (or Thru) - if not, then put whatever doesn't have DMX Out at the end of the chain. Secondly - A single DMX chain (universe) can control up to 512 channels. This means that you don't need two DMX cables for your hazer. Both channels can be controlled along the same cable This means that when you set the DMX address on the hazer, it will set the first channel. As it's a two channel hazer, this means that if you set it to DMX address 47, then it will cover channels 47 and 48. This is the same as intelligent lighting fixtures work - if you have a 16 channel fixture, and you set it to DMX address 1, it will take up channels 1-16. I personally wouldn't use an Aux control for a haze machine. An Aux control will set a specific state (so a specific level that the fan will come on at, and a specific level for the volume of haze output). I'd rather use submasters/individual channel faders as you have better control over the haze. This allows you to set the haze output on one fader, and the fan speed on the other, allowing you to have greater control over the haze. Hope this makes sense!
