Speakon Cables

Hi guys, I've had a search for this and come to no avail.

Basically, my current Speakon stock is all 4 core 2.5mm cable with standard NL4FX Speakons on. I remember when making them it was a bit of a fuss to fit everything in.

I'm wondering if I want to use 4 core 4mm cable for my next lot, primarily as I will be doing some slightly longer runs with it (20m ish) but am concerned I won't fit the 4mm cables in the Speakons very well. Would I be better using one of the all metal Speakons? Like the NLT4FX?

Cheers.

NL4FX are rated to 4mm wire with either screw or solder contacts. However actually assembling them with 4mm wire can be a pain. NLT4FX are rated to 6mm wire, so getting 4mm in will be far easier, however they are solder only. NLT4FX are also rather more expensive, can be L7 a go sold singly, where was NL4FX are about L3.80. Obviously those prices go down fast once you start buying in bulk.

No "can be" about it. Putting NL4FX connectors on 4mm cable is somewhat less fun than, say, burning your eyes out with a hot poker.

Even with the extra expense, NLT4FX for me every time...though I should admit that I actually enjoy soldering anyway.

The difference between a 4mm and 2.5mm is not that much even at 30m according to a manual from http://www.crestaudio.com/media/pdf/caman11-25-97.pdf (previously mentioned in a post on hear)

Power loss on a 4mm cable over 30m is 6.3% and 2.5mm is 9.6%

Comparing costs of 4mm and 2.5mm cable is the 3.3% less power worth it?

Its not just power loss though, it affects the damping factor too.

As the cables impedance goes up the load impedance at the amp increases, and then the damping factor drops (DF=Zload/Zsource).

The damping factor is the measure of the amps ability to control resonant movement of the speaker cone. So if you've got a stack of subs on the end of that cable then maybe loss isn't a problem, you can just feed the amp hotter, but the cable impedance may well be an issue if you care about the transient response of the system.
