Ynot
Well, some friends of ours have this month migrated to Australia and are at present in the midst of the "did we do the right thing" panic... :D Two of their daughters belonged to the same dance school as my two (arguably one of the best in the region here - hence why we took them there!), one of them being great mates with my youngest. Now, I'm sure that when things settle down there in Oz they'll start to look at a new dance school for the girls to go to (though I suspect the shock of having to start the new term at regular school 2 weeks before their English friends will need to wear off, first...! :** laughs out loud **: ). So I thought I'd see if there are any Antipodean BR members living/working in the Perth area who might be able to recommend any suitable dance academy that I can pass on to the family. Having had pretty much EVERY local school on our stage at one point or another (and seemingly picking up new ones and those from a little further afield) I have a good idea of which I would recommend and which I'd NOT if the situation were reversed. Any suggestions?
boatman
It might be worth a punt on the Blue Room's antipodean equivalent here.
spartacus
Having lit a couple of Dance Schools that have come through our place, by far the best organized has been "Bounce Dance Group" (They still came with a pile of CDs... but anyway :D) I believe they cater for 3 years plus. They're based in the South Perth area, which is a five minute drive from the city. http://tiny.cc/aq78xThere are a couple of Youtube videos of their stuff floating around as well. Obviously, organization for a concert is completely different to a school that can provide the service and care required. I'll ask around and see what else pops up. Johnno
Try the interrelated forums Ballet Talk and Ballet Talk for Dancers. Each has a link to the other and the latter is the one for enquiries about about dance schools. The boards have an American bias but there are people on them from all over the world so you should be able to find someone who can help and your friends may find talking to other dancers/mums more useful than asking stage crews' opinions - especially if their offspring will be taking ballet classes which can become very involved and not really assessable by "who brings their CDs". Ynot
CheersMy thoughts behind asking from a crew angle are based on my own experiences here in Blighty - having seen first hand the shows they produce etc it's a good indication of the overall quality of the school - as I say, that's why my girls go where they do. :)

Denise Dance School in Joondalup,John Cleary Dance Company Gail Meade Performing Arts in Wangara. Reply by PM if needed (esp if it's a big NO don't go to any of these!!) Albatross
(snip)Now, I'm sure that when things settle down there in Oz they'll start to look at a new dance school for the girls to go to (though I suspect the shock of having to start the new term at regular school 2 weeks before their English friends will need to wear off, first...! ). Apart from our school year finishing in December, they will get the awesomeness which is our Oz Christmas holidays, in summer. There is nothing better ! ( I know my Mrs. is from the UK, and she tells me this all the time :-) ) October - December is Dance season in Theatres. That's what I'm starting this week here; back to back dance school performances. You could suggest to your friend to see if they can get along to see the end of year concert/performances from a number of dance schools in their area. This will give you a good idea of the standard of work they do.Unfortunately I am on the other side of the country so have no clue about Perth dance schools. Ynot
Cheers. The container containing all their wordly goods from the UK finally arrived with them last week, including all the girls' dance gear, so now that's arrived I believe they're out actively searching for dance schools now. I'll pass on the 'dance season' comment to them later on. (And yes, the young 'uns are definitely looking forward to their long Aussie summer hols, having got there to find that they had to go back to school before their UK mates after OUR 'summer' ended last month)
