Restoring Bose 302 "subs"

Anyone here had a go at replacing drivers in a Bose 302 bass cabinet?

While setting up a new mixing system today I discovered a buzzing sound coming from a poorly 302, which on closer inspection turns out to be the rubber gaskets doing the usual Bose trick of turning to powder after a few years.

So I thought I'd ask the hive-mind here to see what drivers fit and/or work well with the cabinet? I hear on the grapevine that Bose no longer provide replacements for this model, and a trip to Halfords for *any* 12" speaker components seems too cheap and risky...

Thing is - I'm not in the market for a new set of speakers just yet, so replacing even the existing sub with something similar scavenged off Ebay would be a complete no-no. If I could walk in tomorrow or Friday and score a couple of drivers in a London-based shop for £100 max, I could happily tinker with the existing box, despite its limitations... (Actually it's because I know its limitations that I wish to keep it, for now...)

Well ebay has two pairs of 302s at the moment. Have you actually spoken to Bose about replacements. Can you contact Wilmslow Audio https://www.wilmslow-audio.co.uk/catalog/index.php -- see if they have a suggested replacement

Would be an easy purchase on the web, but what they would sound like in direct comparison to the good 302 I hate to think! Certainly what you like of the 302 wouldn't be there frim one loaded with Eminence -or any other driver.

A concurrent post has been automatically merged from this point on.

Do Wembley Loudspeakers still do recones, does anyone? Would they offer you a similar surround for renovation of the active part.

Thank you...

(yes, and I know about converting 802's to flowerpots too...)

Had another look today, and I'm not sure what it was that felt foamy, squidgy and had a hole in it, but it wasn't on the rubber surrounds I found this afternoon :)

So the drivers might be fine after all - certainly I'm getting a lot more clean LF than I'd usually expect from one of these boxes...

Intriguing.

Thanks for useful pointers though!
