Lighting Control - Help Required!

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post here, so Im sorry if this question has been previously asked.

I am currently preparing to operate lighting for a show. We will be using 8 LED lanterns and 4 moving heads, Not quite sure what make and model they are at this moment in time.

The lighting desk that we have at the venue is a traditional 48 channel 2 manual preset lighting desk, So I am looking for means to controlling the fixtures, a software solution is preferred and a USB to DMX adapter, I would like to be relativley easy to use. So what would everyone reccomend for me. I have lots of experience in using lighting desks (Fat Frog, Strand 500 etc.) But I have never used computer based lighting control.

For cheapness and the busk ability factor, I stock American DJ's "MY DMX" its a computer based software that is simple to use. My company hires out to a wide range of clients and we bought this in originally to hire out to schools etc who will be using led or movers purely because of its simplicity to learn and use. It has an effects/shape generator in built for fast programming.

I am suprised nobody has recomended magic q. especially as you are theatrical based. best tool for the job.

simple layout. on screen slider control. and dongles ranging from 50 pounds. or the demo one for 10 pounds.

If you were computer backgrounded I would recomend Daslight.

oops quick edit didn't realise magic DMX is the cheap dongle page. give it a try.

A simpler but similar option to MagicQ is FreestylerDMX , if you have never used larger command line consoles before it can be a daunting task. FreeStyler is computer software that runs on your laptop / desktop (like MagicQ) and that needs a dongle (again, like MagicQ), it's nice and simple and easy to get your head around, and most USB-DMX dongles will work. Download the sofware, read the how to guide and see if you can get started, it's surprisingly simple.
