barn01
Hi, I am looking for some ideas for practicals for a Victorian Music hall for Jack the Ripper. I have the footlights now, wondering what else I could use in terms of practicals around the stage. I suppose it was gaslight they used - anybody got any ideas/experience? Many thanks! Ynot
Try looking at your local domestic lighting store for some of those ornate wall-mounted light fittings, and put an opaque pygmy bulb in them. Vary the intensity to suit your 'look' but bear in mind that gas lamps with wicks didn't flicker like candlelight can - it's a fairly constant off-white (yellowy as I recall) glow. andy_s
There's a book called Theatre Lighting in the Age of Gas, by Terence Rees, which might give you some ideas. Published by Entertainment Technology Press.

Andrew C
Table for the chairman, covered in a velour type cloth. Gavel and a block to smack. Candle sticks on the table (yeah, yeah, RA and fireproof his beard if he has one)
boatman
A couple of these lined with Rosco 388 (gaslight green) work well.
Jivemaster
http://www.brick-lane-music-hall.co.uk/ Look at all the pictures on their site, ask their advice, ask for a visit, buy a ticket! See what inspires you and how you would make it work. PS It's now by City Airport not even vaguely near brick lane.
