Where can I get a rated ball and socket joint?

Hi Guys,

I have looked every where for one of these and just cant find one:

Im looking for a joint thtat would be rated to 200kg.

I could get one made I was just wondering whether anyone had already seen one or used one.

Im trying to make a piece of 1m x 1m metrodeck be able to swivel on one of these.

I will get this made and put together by a professional but for the moment am just looking for the joint.

Hi Madorangepanda,

We are trying to making a 'flying carpet' in other words, a piece of deck that swivel on a point to create the illusion of flying when mixed in with some low fog, projection and lighting.

We have another option which is to create a 'see-saw' which we already have the bits for but we thought a complete moving piece would look better.

It wouldnt need to lock, just be able to swivel freely.

I assume that people at the edges will move it about? This is so that they don't have to take all the weight?

 

If so then there are several ways to do this.

 

It need to split it down into two motions. One is a rotating motion at the motion and the other is a tilting motion at the top.

 

If you look at something like this

You see it could rotate at the bottom and tilt at the top. Not sure on the rating on that but it may do it.

 

Best thing is probably some kind of axle/wheel mount on its side with a piece of tube coming up out of it.

 

You have two plates on the bottom of the deck that then bolt through with a single large bolt into the tube allowing it to tilt.

 

Would be easy for any metalworker to make up.

 

Weak points are the mounts on the underside of the deck and where the axle/wheel mount fixes into the base structure.

Also, failing that, look for a "drop arm ball joint" something for a land rover or other large 4x4 should do it nicely.

Yep I was gunna have people on each corner and then the point taking the majority of the weight.

The orignal idea of the ball was so that I would have it tilting forwards, backwards and sideways not just left to right.

The rotation bit I was not too bother about.

 

If I were to take two of those fixings and bolt them together would that work or shall I try and get a ball joint still?

 

By the way it says they're tensile strengthen is 2.4kn.

 

I'm going to call lindapter on monday and see if they have a suitable fixing.

How about a trip to a breakers yard and use an old propshaft with UJ. The decking is quite heavy, plus a person - so you could get them to cut off the propshaft below the joint and maybe weld a bit of plate to the shaft fore and aft of the joint. This would give you two axes of movement. You light even be able to get some castors on the bottom plate so you can move it about. You might need some kind of damper to stop it overbalancing suddenly, but maybe car shocks would work - not sure never tried them.

Any free jiont will be dynamically unstable tending to fall to an extreme tilt unless supported. Going down the car breaker route, look at getting a couple of coil springs from a car suspension. That way the assembly will have some tendency to stay and even return to horizontal.

If you have some kind of raised base, we had success using a car tyre to dampen the motion in all directions. From memory, we had a non-flexible fixing at the centre, though secure it was loosely attached.
