LED DMX Project

Hi,

I work in a secondary school as a performance tech and am mentoring some pupils in the dark arts. For LX control we are using Magic Q with a mini wing. The pupils are all very keen to learn and have the Chamsys SW installed on their own PC’s. The schools fixtures consist of 24 channels of dimmers plus 24 channels of LED par 56.

I’d really like to find a small project that the kids and I can make so they can control some simple RGB LED’s ‘fixtures’ on there own PC’s. …So my wish list of features for the project would be..

Vero board based

Single (or possibly multiple) Red, Green, Blue LED’s

DIP switches for DMX addressing

USB I/O

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?? Thanks

Making up a DMX controllable LED is fairly simple on protoboard. a small PIC with PWM control, a switch matrix to control DMX addresses and a UART should be able to do what you want. Have a google around and there are a lot of projects around which do this. Instructables is quite a good site in my experience. Not quite sure what you want the USB I/O for though. However USB power for the board is definitely possible.

In the mean time, have you considered just using the MagicQ matrix viewer functionality along with the output grids available in MagicQ? That way you can get a fairly large size grid of pixels just showing up on screen which connects to MagicQ, rather than only having a few physical LEDs which require a physical DMX connection. We do also have preconfigured visualisation shows available to download free from our website which work with the demo shows available in MagicQ. That might be worth having a look at if the pupils wish to play around with a proper rig with generics, LED and intelligent fixtures, rather than just a few LEDs connected to their laptops.
