Illuxit
Yup.Looking to buy me a wireless DMX-solution witch is stable and affordable.I tour with a band in Norway and am currently running a packed universe on my MA-light, doing 22 movers, sunstrips and frontlight. We usualy play hall-gigs or outdoor and FOH is never more than 50m from the stage. Could do with 2 universes but not a reqirement. Any ideas / experiences? mac.calder
W-DMX and ShowDMX are the two big ones, and probably the only 2 I would trust. They both use frequency hopping in the 2.4GHz area of the spectrum, which tends to make them fairly resistant to wifi networks and other such noise in that area. That said... I trust a $20 DMX cable far more than I trust any wireless DMX solution.
Illuxit
That said... I trust a $20 DMX cable far more than I trust any wireless DMX solution. True. But we run fast in and fast out production, and coiling that wire is timeconsuming and said cable is usualy so full of beer so the experience is quite a drag.. :P
mrcog
How do you get sound from stage to FOH? Can't you just run a DMX cable with sound's snake, because again, I would much prefer to have a cable rather than trusting wireless DMX...
timmeh2
Hi I'd run DMX down spare channels in your sound multicore. It's a lot more resilient that others would let you believe. All the bestTimmeh
Illuxit
Hi I'd run DMX down spare channels in your sound multicore. It's a lot more resilient that others would let you believe. All the bestTimmeh This has proven time and again to be trouiblesome. In many cases I end up uith signal only halfway down upstage truss, and frequent problems are jittering and signal-lag. The least favorable alternative. Although this is todays solution, it's not one I like. We also use a Digidesign Venue for sound and will soon be investing in a optic multi for this, so soundsnake will be gone in anycase. I used W-DMX last weekend and it worked like a charm. easy plug and play. See also that they now have started to use 5,4Gh bandwith to make it more private in terms of conflicting wi-fi... Leening towards this :P

Brian
One time use Cat5 runs, stick them in the skip on the out.Let's see... a decent wireless DMX solution will be about £2,000. 50m of CAT about £20 with plugs. So break even is about 100 shows.
son of lx dad
I have used W-DMX on a one universe tour and it was rock solid. However if you can tape a bit of 5 pin to the side of the sound multi what's the problem? Even if your sound dept go to optical cable they still have to run a piece of cable..... mac.calder
Actuallly Cat5 is not a bad idea We have a few very similar to these that we use primarily for connecting to architectural lights, or to run DMX down cat5 patching once we exhaust our DMX patching. They are handy little blighters. Another method is a short DMX lead terminating in IDC punchdowns. 30 seconds an end with a punch down tool, and your lead is terminated. fireball40k
I would recommend giving the LumenRadio CRMX Nova a go. These units are created by the gurus who left Wireless Solution about two years ago. They won a PLASA innovation award last year and are distributed by TMB. CRMX Nova is even more stable and reliable than W-DMX because it does more intelligent frequency analysis and channel hopping. They also support RDM, which W-DMX doesn't at the moment.
